First Post and "report" July 16th

I have been viewing this forum quite regularly. I finally decided to quit looking and post a “report.” This was on Sullivans, probably in the totally wrong place to catch fish. I did have one BIG bite…but I was to late. Maybe it was my attempt at a hook set, maybe I was to late, or maybe he spit it out. Either way :frowning:

Started in the morning about 8. Parked on the wrong end of town. Walked down the beach about a mile or so. Fished a while and caught a ray. Decided to move, walked about a quarter of a mile and just said heck I’ll fish here. This is where I caught my fish. To begin with I was close to the jetties. Lots of boats, and those people on the boats were catching fish. Looked like big fish. I didn’t catch anything but a ray…

After I had moved I caught 5 more fish, one was a Pompano. I let him go. He was to pretty to keep. I even had him in my cooler. But I let him go. I know I’m a bad fisherman for that… Maybe next time I will keep the fish.
I used dead shrimp from Haddrells mostly. Tried cut mullet but it wasn’t producing, but I’m not very patient…
I am learning a thing or two though. Hopefully next time I will catch more. 6 fish/ray was my most productive surf fishing to date since I took it up about 3 months ago.

We even went Faux Kite Fishing for flying fish. Probably not good for the reel but good for the girlfriend.

I do look forward to meeting you all sometime and fishing together.

Tight lines as they say!

P.S. What is it with people walking under your lines when clearly you have a fishing pole with line in the water? I had to tell many of them to watch their head. Finally I said heck with it. If they get caught so be it.

Nice post Nathan. Six fish and a ray, not too shabby for just getting started. Wish you the best of luck and welcome aboard:smiley:

I’ve been eyeing you for a while. I hope to fish with you someday. I think I could learn a thing or two from you.

…mmmmm…we likes to eats the Pomps…:imp:.

Great report, keep 'em coming. :smiley: My rule on Pompano is;

Bigger than the hand, goes in the pan. :stuck_out_tongue:

good catch, Nathan. how do you like the cast pro/akios shuttle combo? Tommy makes one tough fishing rod.

I love the Akios. It’s a great conventional reel with all the features most people will ever need. Mag, centrifugal brakes, based off Abu’s design so maintenance will be a breeze. Note that I have a Penn Fathom 25N and a Penn Squall 12, I prefer the Akios for regular surf fishing.

I really like the rod. Everything looks nice and feels right. I would recommend it. But my first rod was a Tsunami that was rated way to high, but I eyelet from one of the guides popped out after I had only used it about 3 times. So I am returning it and replacing it with a Mojo. It is similar weight to the CCP. Then I’ll be able to give a better review.

The mojo’s are great rods. It comes with 5 yr warranty. If you have the extra cash you can upgrade one level more into the avid series which comes with a lifetime warranty for a hundred or so more. I have 3 of the 9’6 rods and they are my favorite rod for reds, but I use a spinning reel. I think the avids are made in the USA, if I’m not mistaking. They are red like a bicycle reflector and pretty much glow in the dark, good for night fishing.

You can’t go wrong with ccp. I have each rod that Tommy has designed. My custom 14ft 8-12oz is my favorite. Hope to see you on the beach one day. Good luck!

The warranty is one reason I decided to upgrade to the Mojo. I can’t afford an Avid right now. Well I could but I shouldn’t since I’m just getting into this. I heard they used to have an upgrade program. Don’t know what all that is about but if I do have an issue with the Mojo I would probably upgrade if possible.
And I do like glow in the dark things.

Do you have an Akios?

What do you use the 8-12 for? I went with the 2-5, that’s more the range I have been fishing with.
I think I do need a heavy rod but I can’t really reason why right now. I want to start shark fishing but I really don’t know how to yet. From what I understand go at night and cast a chunk of something a shark would eat. But do I need a heavy weight rod

yes, I have the akios 656ctm (use it on the 13ft 3-6) and akios757ctm (use it on the 13ft 6-10 or the 14ft 8-12). I also have the 555 tourno for tournament casting. as for spinning reels, I use the akios scora 80 on the 12ft rod. I use the akios targa 5000 on the 11ft rod and akios targa 4000 on the 10ft rod. i normally use the heaver whenever i go to the jetty. i can tell you that the 11ft rod is a beast and is one of my favorite rods to use. If you decide to target large sharks, i would definitely go with a heaver. the ccp 12 4-8 rod is a good choice. great for casting and fishing and can handle a decent size fish.
