This is my first post, I come across this site about 3 weeks ago when I was looking to go surf fishing for the first time in years. As a kid I remember going to Breach inlet with my grandfather all the time. Last few years Ive been strictly catfishing but now that I have no boat lake access is a little more difficult.
Well Ive been to Breach about 4 times and Sullivans about 3. First started using squid and shrimp with no luck.
Im a Firefighter so I have the luxury of two days off between shifts, so one morning I was wanting to go fishing and stopped by walmart because I didnt want to buy shrimp or anything else. I saw this stuff called Fishbites, looked at it, put it down kept looking then finally at the last minute grabbed a bag. Figured it was $7 with tax what the heck.
I went to Breach, and I honestly got sick of catching Whiting and Spot. I was using the bloodworm flavor. I was amazed that it actually worked.
So the other day while grabbing some other tackle I grabbed a bag of Shrimp, and me and the girlfriend went to Sullivans. We both caught small shark on the Shrimp flavor which was really cool for her cause it was her first.
My only problem now is I cut up whiting for my big rod, and still cant hook into anything big. I would love to catch some big shark but its alot harder than it seems.
Thanks to everyone who posts on this site, it truly has gotten me back into surf fishing like I did with grandfather when I was a kid.
sounds like you had fun, I took my nephew out this morning. We were using some frozen shrimp and caught some whiting and used it for bait and he caught his first shark ooff of the beach. We ended up with 25 whiting and we will have a nice dinner. I will have to try that bait next time I go out. thanks for the info.
Try calling the Manager at Wally World, and ask for some advice there!! I think you’d be better advised to shop for bait locally!! Welcome to the site my friend!
…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!
Wally World has its purpose. Only one I’ve found thus far is they were (for reasons beyond me) recently selling packages of 2x 8oz sinkers for $1.00 each here in West Ashley. Yah, I bought all they had.
Check out Haddrells Point Tackle (West Ashley or MTP). They can give you some suggestions.
I don’t shark fish much (ok, intentionally but the King fishing has been pretty crappy so far) but in the past I’ve used a whiting head hooked through the bony part of the head and have caught sharks.

next time I’ll cut your line! I’m there to relax and enjoy fishing. Don’t be a donkey.
I love the local tackle shops, go whenever I can. I just happen to be at Walmart and saw this stuff, picked it up on a whim and figured id pass on my experiences with it.
Sorry if I offended anyone with shopping at Walmart, not sure if anyone here really knows what firefighters make, but we spend as little as possible so if its cheaper some place else then ill buy it at that location. Didnt know Walmart was such a hated place around here.
Stuckonland: Dont really care what I catch, im just ready to catch something other than whiting and spot. I use several different rigs that ive found reasearching shark fishing.
That must have been you out there this morning. I came in right after you and left at the same time. Looks like we have a friend in common, that crazy blue heron! I was skunked today, just a few bites…guessing blues because they bit off everything on the minnow except the head.
Yeah that was me. Caught a few whiting but thats it. Guy on the rocks caught two nice sheepshead I saw. I ended up going back after the rain stopped with a few more whiting and that was it.
Pretty cool to have seen someone else from the site just wish I would have known it lol.
It’s not a hated place, but tackle shops are not chains that care more about the bottom line than helping their customers. Nothing wrong with a purchase here and there from wally world…but personally, I try to put my hard earned money into a local entity vs Sam Walton’s evil non-union empire any chance I get lol

That’s the reason I will continue to support Walmart with a majority of my non tackle purchases.
Yah, you missed the meaning there. Ever see the documentary on how they treat their folks or how they respond if an employee so much as mentions the word union?
