Thanks in large part to your help I caught my first shark (big enough to be worth bragging about a little anyway ), today on SI. Something I have been trying to do all summer and I’m pretty happy with it. I was curious if one of you more experienced anglers could help me figure out what species it is. I tried to ID it by looking up guides, but I’m stumped.
It was roughly 4’ from tip to tip. Fought hard, it took me about ten minutes to bring it in.
Nice one! I would say Sandbar as well. First dorsal starts a bit forward to be a Finetooth and I’m petty sure there is a dorsal ridge. For future catches, check for; 1) dorsal ridge 2) check out the teeth 3) where the first dorsal originates. 4) then look for spots, black tips, stripes, dark patch on the nose etc. Some are easier to ID then others.
It also had two black spots on the main dorsal fin, which you can’t see in the picture because we took it after he had decided to roll in the sand a few times. I agree after some more Googling that it closely resembles a sandbar shark. I made sure it got safely back out into the ocean, which was a bit of a learning experience because that shark sure wanted a piece of me!
