Fish I.D.

Could someone please tell me what kind of fish this is.My girl caught this yesterday in Folly River and had the slightest idea if it was a keeper fish or not…
Yes by the way we came from the upstate knowing it woyld be cold but didnt expect the flood tide like it was. My sheephead spot was under water and my nnormal Whiting spots were on fire though. Hit another hideaway spot and caught 4 Black Drum. But yes it was cold on the water. I told my new friend girl if she could take this she definitely would be my next girlfriend. Yes she past that test and caught alot of fish over me… Beginners luck she had i see…

Without pics, it didn’t happen…

-The size of a fish is directly proportional to the time between when it’s lost and the story is told. - Me
-What’s the best eating fish, you ask? I’ve found that for a lot people, its the ones that they happen to be able to catch, clean, and cook. - My Dad (1/13/37 - 9/27/16 I love you Pops)
-Until you have loved a dog, part of your soul remains unawakened. Anatole France (paraphrased)

Corry, I was taught that they were all keepers! Must have been to ugly to post. I remember the first time we caught an African Pomp we threw it back it was so ugly.

First time i ever seen that kind of fish down there. It was real meaty though. She ask could we keep it and i was like ummmm no because i have the slightest idea what it is… Look like something in the porgy family.

If you catch them with enough meat to filet, they are good to eat. Very similar to Beeliner and Porgy.

thats interesting seeing that yall eat them. Ive always just sliced them up for cut bait, one slice can last enough to catch a dozen fish. being that it was that tough for using as bait, i’d suspected it would not be a good fish to eat. looks like the next fat one will go into the ice box.

I think that is what some of the old timers used to call a “Sailor’s Choice.”

Grilled whole on the grill I noticed no difference in that and a red porgy. Some places just call ring tails, red progys and others sea bream. If you eat break in fresh water you will like them. Most fish that don’t get eaten aren’t that bad its just there are easier and better options. Some people don’t like sheepshead because they are tough to fillet compared o other fish. (**() you stay fishing in my spots. Lol.

That’s like comparing a big mac to a whopper. Sure you can eat it, but there are lots of places that sell filet mignon.

So you wouldn’t even give it Wendy’s quality. That was the only direct exactly the same taste test comparison I did so that’s why I said that and red porgy is far more popular than ring tail. FYI red porgy is a delicate fish meaning the better you care for it the better it is. Slamming on deck and not icing properly is what most people do and why it gets a bad name like many other fish. I’ve heard it called cat food before. Your statement is like saying you can eat fish but there are places that sell diver scallops.
