Fish ID?

Was down from Charleston area for the redfish tournament this weekend. When crossing the Port Royal sound we came across a school of fish tearing it up on the top of the water…we could see flashes of a turqouis blue/green and red but couldn’t make out what they were…exciting to watch as they were in a frenzy. Didn’t have time to mess around with them as we only had a few minutes to get back in to the weigh in.

Any ideas on what they could have been?

how deep? seems early for spanish, could be bonita?

We were cutting across the sound from “Skull Creek” to get back to the landing, the action was pretty much in the middle of the sound, not sure what the depth was where they were…I thought maybe bonito but the red we saw made me think otherwise

They were blue fish

They didn’t look like blues, with the red flashes we saw.

Lots of blues and Spanish around already…

Could have been jack crevalle. They really put on a show when feeding on menhaden or whatever else they are eating.

That’s where the red comes from, blood. None of our inshore fish are red. Blues, spanish, jacks can all bloody up the water. Not too early for any of them.

Blue, green, red… Sounds like rainbow trout to me!

Thanks guys…unless they were really big blues, probably was either Jacks or Spanish. Wish we would have time to hook one and get a photo.

Blues get way bigger than the biggest spanish I’ve ever seen.

I grew up in the Northeast fishing places like Montauk - we used to catch some big gorilla blues - in the 15-18 lb range - along with 40+lb stripers.

I know that some decent blues are caught down in this area, I personally haven’t caught any bigger than 2-3 lbs myself. Sure would like to get into a few big ones. Am yet to set a hook into a Spanish or Jack yet…but from what I saw the other day, I think it’s time to start targeting them!

This happened to me last summer as well. Was fishing a creek near Port Royal and right near the boat a large group of big fish started busting. They looked to have a reddish hue as well. Only lasted a few seconds then saw it happen again maybe 50 yards down the creek. Didn’t know what they were but figured it was spanish, blues, or jack.

Could they not be large redfish? I know in the gulf they are caught in large schools feeding on the surface.

Sounds like a jack attack. They will boil up and destroy a school of pogoes in a few seconds. Great sport if you can cast into that melee!
