Caught this little guy today and was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of fish it is?
Looks like a baby croaker. Barbawang???

Whiting aka kingfish. If you keep fishing you’ll catch 200 this year. Bottom feeders. Love shrimp but you can catch them on cut mullet too. Smaller ones can pick you to death some days. Good eating.
First, Most, Biggest
Whiting, Southern Kingfish. There are three varieties of them. Southern, Gulf and Northern. Most popular in the “surf zone” would be the Gulf and then the Southern. The Gulf Kingfish Get the largest of the three; State record 2lb-10.
“There’s a fine line between fishing and standing in the surf like an idiot.”
The question here should be, why are you holding a whiting with pliers?

Ha! Certainly looks funny, but if you’re seriously trying to take a photo of a fish to identify it later, the more fish in the picture and the fewer fingers, the better. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t afraid of the little feller.
Agreed!!! Plus, for all the money we spend on “accessories” for fishing, I say use them every chance you get.

Yeah, just shove your fingers up through the gills and out the mouth. Seems to be a “great” handle this time of year.

Great contribution as always. Would expect nothing less from you.
That’s a southern kingfish, but no one calls them that. Most everyone around here calls them whiting. They wont always have those markings on the side, and sometimes the markings will be more prominent. Good eating if you catch alot of them and dont mind small fillets.
also great for bait! half a whiting catches the most big redfish for me in the surf and tossing one out live will get you bull reds, sharks, and of course the unavoidable “sting kong” (giant stingrays)
Dparker, are northern kingfish caught in this area as well? I’ve always wondered why some whiting i catch are plain silver and some have those grey markings, looks like I am catching both southern and gulf kingfish would be the explanation.
Yes you can catch both of those varieties around here. never have seen or caught a northern one myself
