I’m relatively new to the area and have been hitting the surf on Sullivan’s Island. I’ve hooked up with some small flounder and blues but finally caught something worth posting (I think?!). The Trout was just under 20 inches and a fun fight on my lighter tackle.
I’m really anxious to catch some reds. I see the great pictures coming from guys that sound like they’re catching them on folly and south. Any tips for Sullys would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been using Carolina and double drop rigs with live mullet around rock jetties.
North end of Folly Beach is where the Bulls are…tell all your buddies.
Better hurry though, Mr. Stevo might catch them all.
I would suggest chunk bait on a short leader, fixed weight, with a decent sized circle hook. Mullet is great bait, seems right now though chunked Blue fish is hot right now. Find some good current near an inlet at the top of the tide.
x2 on hitting North Folly. It is without a doubt one of the most productive fisheries around for bull reds. It is on fire:smiley: Get out there early. With all the press it’s gotten lately the premium spots may be taken. Especially on the weekends. Rigging wise you will get as many opinions as fishermen, but Dparker steered you in the right direction. Use short 6 inch 60lb mono liters with fixed weights. It reduces gut hooks on those big breeder reds. I like 30lb test with a number 5 owner circle hook. The cheep hooks can break or bend out, and you wouldn’t want them to do so on a fish of a lifetime. It costs a small amount of change per hook more to get them. If you happen to catch a fish make sure you support it properly, with hands under the belly. Holding them vertically is supposed to be bad for those heavy fish. Fresh bait is the best bait to use. Catch smaller fish like blues and whiting and cut them up and throw them out. Fishing often is also a huge plus. If you get out allot your chances of landing a big fish substantially increases. Good luck and post um up. This time of the year if you put in the time and effort your odds of landing a big fish are very good.
Double drop rigs. With 5/0 circles. Never gut hooked a red with this set up allways corner of mouth. I like double the bait because the bluefish will pick it off and when the reds come by at least there might be some left on one of the hooks. Doubles your chances.
Was there last weekend, can vouch for this. Bring some bait with you though, mullett were sparse in the surf(at least where I was at). Stevo saved my day, thanks btw! Caught a bull right after you left!
Heck yea man. You were the one I gave the bluefish to? Happy I could help if that was you. If your ever out of bait just come ask me I’m allways loaded with bait.
