Fishin' from the beach...

I haven’t had much luck with shrimp and squid for bait in the past, but last year cut up a small whiting and the results were much better for both whiting and the little sharks. Would cutting up the wings on one of those small rays that we catch be even more productive? Thanks for your help…also, is there a way to get north to the next inlet up from the state park without having to walk the mile plus???

You might want to try mud minnows. I’ve actually never used them in the surf, but it’s an option.

Also, if you can throw a castnet - go to the sound side where there’s not a steep drop-off in the surf, and look for little wakes moving through the water. Those are likely finger mullet, which can be good bait. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, though, they can be hard to spot. Also, throw the net just in front of the wake, or you will likely miss them. You can also catch mullet (with the castnet) in the ponds by the golf course by the entrance to Wyndham. Cut up the mullet (full size mullet, not finger mullet) and that’s good bait, too.

I’m not aware of any way to get to that inlet other than walking. On the north side of that inlet is Jeremy Cay, which is a gated development. On the south side is the park, I think.

I’ve never used cut stingray for bait, so I don’t know.

If you want to, get a decent size hook, and put a large chunk of cut whiting or some other fish on the hook, and throw it as far as you can. You’ll almost certainly catch a decent size shark.

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

One thing I forgot to mention. You could also use blue crab. Rip the shell off, crack it in half, and hook it through the rear flipper leg and body…hope that makes sense.

I caught a good size bonnethead off the beach with that last year.
