im chewing on a move to beaufort from columbia. recently reread the section on beaufort in Reds! (book on redfishing in sc). author said most guys fish the broad and beaufort rivers, a few go into the coosaw area, but it basically omitted lady island, st. helena, pritchard’s, or hunting. any thoughts on that? im coming down thurs , hope to check out some areas by car.
My experience has been that your odds for reds are increased if you fish for them near the shoreline and marsh grass areas, particularly where creeks empty out into either river. Boat or kayak would get you best access to the where the reds forage. If you are land locked then a pair of rubber boots for exploring the banks and creeks may be in order but some of the pluff mud can get deep so don’t go alone.
ive got a motorized kayak and i know the types of areas i like to fish from doing it in charleston for a couple years, i just found it curious that the book didn’t give any treatment to that whole area.
You know that most folks don’t talk about there faverate places!
i read back thru and looked at maps and went down yesterday to look at a couple landings. ive got a much better idea of the area now.
think the book doesnt give much discussion to the private islands b/c its less helpful for most. book is very worthwhile if youre learning a completely new area of the coast.
Look at the chart or google up Laurel Bay boat landing(MCAS Beaufort housing). The landing is on Broad River. Go straight across the Broad River to the opposite bank and you will find a large flat at low tide. Huge schools of reds cruise up and down that flat.
