I’m new to the area and dying to catch some fish. I’ve been to breach inlet a couple times just fishing lures (spoons, plugs, rubber bait) with no luck. I figured its time to ask more experienced anglers so I’m not going in blind. Everyone I see there is using live/frozen bait which I’ve never done before. Any recommendations on rigs, bait? Or even lures (top water, divers, jigging)?
I’m sure it depends on what I’m fishing for but I’m open to all suggestions. Thanks for the help!
What I usually see is the drop shot or looper rig. I’m not really going to use steel leaders anymore and just focus on the drop rigs to catch more fish. The big thing is finding the lead size that will sit on the bottom and allow you to cast however far you want. You will catch a lot of fish using this rig. It’s definitely fun to watch your rod bend over and shake. Good luck and let us know how you do.
I’ve never heard of Breach inlet. What do people normally catch?
I fish alongside the rocks from Breach (the bridge) down to Station 30. Anything with structure. Carolina rigs with live mullet or popping corks baited with live mud minnows or live shrimp. I’ve fished from Breach to the end of Sullivan’s and have had best results slow retrieving live mullet on a carolina rig.
Popping cork on shrimp is a good technique if you’re targeting sheephead, but of course shrimp will attract pretty much anything.
The biggest flounder I ever caught was at Breach Inlet. It was on a rising tide with moderate current. The classic flounder rig - bullet weight - 2’ leader, tiny float kahle hook with the biggest mud minnow I could find. I was near the rock groin on the Sullivan’s side casting out about 10-15 yds and letting the rig go with the current. When it stopped I tightened the line and waited to feel movement and set the hook. The reason I remember it so well is because I didn’t have a landing net but I had a fillet knife , I stabbed the fish in the gills and drug it onto the sand. It was just under 9 lbs. Ive caught lots of flounder at breach some reds and plenty of whiting- if you can avoid the hordes of pinfish
Thanks for the insight everyone, very helpful. Any luck with artificial bait? And are most types of fish near the bottom or will any top bait or poppers work?
