fishing edisto reefs and ledge

The family and i are coming down the edisto on vacation for the week of the 4th and was wondering if anything was happening around the edisto offshore reef and nearshore reef or around that area we are wanting to bottom fish and maybe do some trolling and one that week wanting to take my 5 year old to catch some shark any idea where to catch them? Does anyone know how far out the blue water or the ledge is from edisto. And if anyone is interested in having a buddy boat let me know. We will be in a 26ft seapro johnson 250. thanks

OOseaproRR,
I fished then Edisto 40 on 6/16 and caught spanish mackerel. There were a lot of fish around the reef area including some little tunny Edisto 40 is about 5 miles east of the South Edisto sea bouy and is in about 50’ of water.
good fishing to you,

If you are interested in catching shark, pretty easy. There is a deep hole just outside of Bay Creek where the sound meets, just off the point area and the beach right there. You can catch all the little sharks you want right there. Just find them on your depthfinder in the deep hole, anchor right off the hole and drop some cut bait, squid, shrimp, etc.

If you go out to the 40 and anchor just drop a piece of fresh cut bait on the bottom and you should catch all the 3 footers you want.

Last week I was in the St Helena sound near the Combahee Light attempting to fish for Cobia with live menhaden and as quick as we could throw out, 3 feet or so shark were burning up our lines, a bonnethead or two and mostly sharpnose. The bigger sharks bit whole menhaden and the little sharks were hitting shrimp or cut mullet.

The problem is I always catch sharks, even when I’m not fishing for them. I probably need to start fishing for sharks and maybe one day I’ll luck up and get a bull red or cobia or tarpon or something.

Hope this helps.

OK thanks yall for the information i think we going to ride out to ledge sunday if the weather in looking good and troll a little and work our way back in and stop and bottom fishing some and later in the week go fish for the sharks. thanks again ill be on 68 if anyone going out of edisto

Race Ready Fishing

Last year about this time we ducked offshore in our 23 footer out of Edisto (usually fish out of Charleston), looked at the map and just headed straight out to a spot in about 100’ of water that looked interesting, was just under thirty miles from the beach. Only me and my dad so we were a little short handed; caught about a dozen dolphin some kings and some tunny.

I will be down in my 210 seahunt for the week of the 4th. I would be interested in poss going out as a buddy boat. I am also interested is poss splitting a charter if it is to rough for smaller craft to get out to the blue water. Like you I am curious about how far out you have to go to get into some dolphin. I grew up fishing out of Morehead City NC and we averaged 25-40 miles out. If anyone has some info or is interested please let me know. Thanks

About 30 miles out this time of year, get to at least 90’ and then troll on out.

Father’s Day (last year I think?), 30ish miles out, 100’ish water:

Lost a lot of fish that day because it was just me and the old man (last minute trip on a really calm day) and we left late around 8:00am and got back around 3:00 (only about four hours of trolling), but you can find them fairly close this time of year.

Really appreciate that info. Are there any weed lines and blue water that close in ?

It changes everyday, you never know. I haven’t been out lately so I can’t help you there.

But that day the above picture was taken we came across several large patches, so it is possible.
