Fishing Equipment/Methods Folly Beach

Hello, I am going on vacation with my family for a week in August. I will be staying on East Ashley near the lighthouse by Folly beach. I am not sure on the fishing methods used for shore and pier fishing. I used to do a lot of sea fishing where I grew up in Ireland but I have never sea fished in the USA.

I would really appreciate if some one could tell me what rod and tackle I should buy for general beach/pier fishing. Nothing specialized just general fishing.

Also there is a creek right behind the house we’re renting. Are there fish to be caught in there? I know crabbing is popular (was advertised as one of the benefits of staying in this house)

I truly appreciate any help:smiley:

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Fish; no.

Crabs; yes.

For rod and tackle you can use the same rod in the creek and from the beach. I generally fish a 7 foot medium action spinning rod. Generally 15-25 lb test monofilament for the mainline, and 25 lb test fluorocarbon leader. Use small hooks, #2 to 1/0 size circle hooks. Most fish here will be biting live or cut bait. If fishing in the creek use a clacker type float with about an 18 inch leader below the float. Use either live or fresh shrimp, or a live mud minnow on the hook below the float. Anything on the bottom with get picked by crabs. If fishing from the beach use the same rod and line, but fish either a double drop rig, or a fish finder rig. You will need 2-3 ounce pyramid sinker, and same #2 - 1/0 size circle hooks. Use fresh shrimp or fresh cut mullet for bait. If staying on Folly stop by Crosby’s seafood and get a pound of medium shrimp. Cut each shrimp into thirds or half sized pieces for bait. You don’t need to cast far, most fish will be in the troughs between the beach and the sandbar, and just beyond the sandbar at low tide. Feel free to PM me with specific questions. I don’t fish Folly beach, but methods and equipment are the same for most beaches here. Check the forum for the best spots on Folly.
