Fishing Friday

Looks like I will be able to take my sons fishing tomorrow. They’re both home for the holidays from Clemson and Boston. We don’t get many chances to fish. I will launch at one of the ramps on the Broad River on hwy 170. Since we’re coming from Aiken I don’t think we’ll get there very early. I will try to catch the last part of the falling tide (but may miss that altogether) and the first part of the incoming.

I haven’t fished the area a whole lot but would like to catch reds, trout or anything that bends the pole.

I know a couple of creek mouths to fish the outgoing but don’t know much about fishing the incoming.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I’d really appreciate it.

Have you considered bringing them to Murray and trying the stripers and/or white perch? Both species were biting pretty good from the elbow on up into the rivers this past weekend. If you decide to try Murray for the stripers just watch for diving gulls and try to approach quietly. The perch can also be found at times under the gulls and have been eating the 1/2 ounce white/silver Berry’s spoons vertically jigged in water between 27’ and 40’ deep. The perch are easy to locate with a depthfinder and are fun to catch as well as pretty good table fare.

Spoonmaster,

Thanks for the tip. I hadn’t considered that. I know less about lake fishing than saltwater but would really like to learn to catch stripers. I took my Clemson son to Lake Murray last March but we were blown off the water and skunked.

Sorry, I missed this. If you are going again tomorrow send me a PM and I’ll share a couple of places in that area.

10-4 on the windy conditions in March. I fished a largemouth tournament with a friend last March and we had to cross Murray to get back for the weigh-in. He usually only knows two speeds, idle or wide open. That changed after we went airborn about 4’ over the water. When we finally came back to earth he slowed down to a sensible speed.
I’m planning to try Murray again tomorrow. The recent rain may mess things up for me. I’ll post here if we do any good. I don’t like fishing muddy water, but cold muddy water is usually worse. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Took my son out today and we were skunked. Knew that it would be an incoming tide, we targeted the trout; had a load of nice large shrimp from Southern Drawl, but we had absolutely NO bites from anything! I tried changing up a number of things to no avail.
I ended up letting him fish under the Skull Creek bridge and he caught some small BSB which made him somewhat happy. Not sure what I was missing today.
