Coming from Nebraska in late April to explore the area and I hope to fish a lot. Just starting my research but open to any kind of fishing. Love the way saltwater fish pull. Any info that would flatten the learning curve would be great. Spent a month in Gulf Shores AL and loved surf fishing. Looking for some day trips, places to eat, etc to keep the wife happy. If any one is willing to go fishing I could pay for gas etc. Just love to fish. Lots of flooding right now. Can’t wait for April and thanks for any help.
I don’t fish down that way, but April is a very good month in general for this area. Surf fishing will be picking up as the bait really starts to show up and the fishing in the creeks and rivers really picks up. While I have not eaten there in a few years, The Old Post Office restaurant always had some good food. Good luck and enjoy your time on the Island it is really a neat place.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve read through 6 pages of topics using Edisto as the key word in the search. Lots of great information. This forum is a great resource. Thanks
Fair warning - be prepared for gnats in April. I’ve about been run off the water by them. Bring a buff to cover your neck and ears. Wear long sleeves and long pants. That should be enough to keep your sanity!

My wife hates bugs and gnats are the worst. I don’t want to tell her this.
Wear the long sleeves and a buff. Also, I know it’s greasy but Skin so Soft works well. There is also a local product available at all the stores called No Natz. It works well too. A big ole cigar helps as well. April will be prime time for sharks. Try one of the guides for a 1/2 day trip. You won’t be disappointed. The surf will have whiting and sharks right now. Cut bait(mullet, menhaden, squid) and shrimp are the usual baits.
Hey Husker. Dreaming of salt water it sounds like. I understand completely. If I am there then will be looking for inshore/offshore company. For your wife a day trip into Charleston is always a good idea. If she is an outdoors person but not into fishing Botany Bay is a good place to get back to nature. If you take bikes there are great bike paths at the State Park. You can also rent bikes. There are some good restaurants. We like Pressley’s at Edisto Marina, and Whaley’s is a great “dive” restaurant. There is not a restaurant on the island that I would not go to. Another option for you would be to fish with one of the guides there like Ugly Duckling, Fontaine, Double Shot, etc. Sorry to hear your area has that epic flooding. Wish y’all the best.

Obviously Palmetto Charters is a great guide service as well. Have heard excellent reviews.

RADADDY is IMO the best guide on Edisto, so don’t forget him!

Thanks for all the information. I just want to fish and keep my wife happy. Because of cost rarely take a guide. Love meeting people while I fish! Plan on bring a cast net. Few people in Nebraska know how to throw one. Good bait is so important.
I have a lot of soft plastics, hard baits, and gulp products from different trips. Any advice on what to bring? I also fly fish but don’t know if that would be worthwhile. Right now plan on bringing 2 spinning rods. one med act with 10 lb braid and heavy act with 30 lb braid. Wife hates the check in bag I always bring. I always have a hard time keeping it under 50 lbs. Is there a place to buy bait and tackle on the island? So many questions…
Buy a minnow trap when you get here, Catch bait in the creeks. Trout, red drum in creeks. Whiting, blues and a few shark in surf. I will be here some of the month of April and have boat, we might be able to get together. Don’t waste time with fly rod. Are you renting a house or staying in the golf resort?
There are several places on the island with a decent selection of tackle. Edisto Marina has a pretty good offering
