Fishing Licenses to be valid 1 yr from purchase

S. 972 is a Senate bill that just passed our state Senate. It will be in the House next week. The bill is by Senator Campsen, and it provides that hunting and fishing licenses are valid for a period of one year from the date of purchase instead of the normal June-June license time period. It also provides for a 3yr termed license that will run for 3 years from the date of purchase.

If you’re interested in seeing the bill pass the legislature, you might want to let your House member know you’d like him/her to support it.

bout dam time…Phin, had it not been your post I would say this was the most logical post all day, but I know you’re good for better than this…

Looks like some our reps are finally trying to pass something worthwhile.

was it all campsen getting the ball rolling? i know we had this discussion last year, and the consensus was that it would be hard to change the system in place. i’m gonna register my boat and buy my 3-yr license at the same time… efficient!

that’s great news… will stay posted for the lowdown.

This is great now you can buy one every year on your birthday easy day to remember. Always a problem to get one 1/2 way through summer and it would save DNR from the mad rush every July 1.

this all seems to easy & makes too much sense. this’ll never fly

Yeah remembering to renew your license in late june is much harder than trying to remember exactly when you bought your license the previous year.

Hungryneck what if your birthday was July 1st or some other “middle of the summer” day?

Stop or I’ll shoot!

Ya gotta look at the business side of it too. Ever been in a tackle store or wal mart on 4th of July weekend trying to get a license? The system gets over-loaded, takes 20 mins to issue each license, and the lines are out the door. Personally i think it is about time. Last couple years we have had to bring in additional help to only issue licenses during that renewal week. Thank you Senator Campsen! I know many of the businesses that issue licenses have been pushing for this for years

This is obviously a sign of the apocalypse, the legislature doing something that actually makes sense.

You would get a renewal notice when your license would be about to expire. No need to worry about difficulties in dropping your June habits.

Since current licenses will expire July 1 many of us will still be getting one then for the foreseeable future. Still a good idea. Welcome to the 21st century do not get used to it.

So the state is going to pay to send out renewal notices to every person that holds a fishing license? Sounds expensive

Perhaps you should contact your buddy Mr. Sotille and explain to him how your Senator’s got it wrong here.

FWIW-
I believe notices are already sent out to license holders. And extra DNR staff also must be brought in every June/July to deal with the rush for licenses. Theory behind this is that it will save everyone time and money.

as hungryneck pointed out, for those of us who fish regularly, we’ll be renewing it right around then anyway…

unless the state wants to sweeten the deal and let us buy pro-rated semi-annual licenses starting over on our birthdays. then i would be able to dedicate a few more brain cells to the beer drinking…

will those “new” renewal notices cost the state anymore than the ones I have been getting for years? Seriously doubt it

Think I heard something about a three year license in the mix also.

If you want to read the entire bill, there’s a lot more to it than just the license terms. There’s a lot about where the money goes as well. Fritz, your Senator’s got some gems in here.

Now DNR won’t have to work as hard checking people for licenses during June when they all run out. That is one downside to the revenue for DNR, because they won’t know when your fisin L runs out. Oh well, they will find another way.
