I got rid of my jon boat because the wife wants to upgrade to a walkaround(20ft range). The problem is that a jon boat is all I know and all I have fished off of usually in really skinny water to catch reds, flounder and trout. I never really had to worry about where I went in that boat(loved it). I know I can always fish the jetties and the grillage with the walkaround, but after that how limited am I for reds, trout and flounder? I really like fishing the rivers and bulls bay, but I am not sure how limited I am going to be with a boat that drafts more water. I’m pumped to get the new boat but have a feeling I’m going to have to learn to fish a whole different way than I’m used to. Thanks fellas!!!
Keep the jon boat too! She’d let you if she loved you.
Seriously, how much cash can you get out of it? A few bucks for annual registration and property tax, a few bucks for engine maintenance, the boat is virtually cost free. Heck she probably spends that much a year on shoes. It certainly can’t get you too far into a 20ft WA.
As soon as you get rid of it, you’ll miss it and start looking for another one.
What stickman said.
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
Yep, you will have to get used to fishing on anchor out of 20WA.
I have 21, way to big for Trolling motor, but I do catch all of the fish you list. had a slam this past Sunday with quality fish.
I use live bait and anchor up with two anchors to prevent sway, but I can fish 6 rods at one time, nothing like an inshore chinese fire drill:smiley:
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.
Lights On!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of dust with a rod in one hand and a beer in the other,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming…

What they said. You’ll regret it if you get rid of the creek boat.
Bought a new 22 bay about five years ago and had a sweet little high tide 15.5 and thought I’ll keep it and use it…sold it this year and got way less than I could if I would a sold it when I boiught the new boat. Used it one year for shrimping… Bay boats can fish almost anywhere a creek boat can and trolling motors work fine ion bays up to 24 ft. I am an avid inshore fisher but can also venture out to the reefs on good days. ANyway good luck and have fun with the new toy…
Peace And Ease
Everyone should believe in something, I believe I’ll go fishing !!!
He is not looking at a bay boat though. He is looking at a walkaround. Not much creek fishing in it.

Jeff
I got rid of my 20 WA I had when I moved here. Aggravated the hell out of me trying to fish the river and creeks. Bota was great at the jetties, reefs, and offshore. Wrapping up a deal on a 245 Sea Fox Bay Fisher as we speak.
If the jon is paid for by all means keep it
I just bought a new (to me) bay 22 footer, and I’m still goona keep my little dock boat! Nothing beats the no muss, no fuss little boat you just push off the dock and go.
rnellie,
what kind of wa are you looking at.
going brand new or used.
You’re welcome to try mine out if you’d like.
If you really like it, you can keep it (for a small fee of course :D)

Happy boatin’ y’all!!
Thanks for all the advice. The jon boat was already sold, but we are definitely in agreement that I am eventually getting another one. Not that bad of a deal because I have been wanting a newer jon boat anyway.
Hanapaa - thanks so much for the offer, but I think I am going brand new. The Key West 2020 is actually one of the boats I am really considering. That or a Sea hunt Victory 207.
Almost all the same places, just longer casts. ![]()
Instead of creeks, creek mouths. Still more fish out there than you can catch.

rnellie, I just bought this Key West 196 CC bay boat back last fall and I love it for an all-round good boat. I can take this thing offshore (only been 32 miles so far, but will go farther), has a trolling motor for inshore fishing, will run in 12-14" water (will float in 10"), great for shrimping (big flat deck up front), and has post to set up pedestal seats front & back. Has lots of storage space and livewells front & back.
But wish I had a jon boat for flounder gigging. Don’t want to be running up on any oyster bars with that fiberglass hull.

Another reason to keep a small cheap boat you don’t worry about!
you should check out the Proline boats as well…I love mine

Like you said, you will have to learn to fish differently in a bigger boat. It’s like driving a small car and moving up to a big suv you will have to learn the limits on where you can/cannot go.
If anyone wants a good jon boat I’ve got one to let go.
Double D.
I push my 212 sea Hunt around in 1.6 feet of water all the time.Less if the tank is 1/2 full and i am alone. Then I jump up and hit 50mph going to another spot.
