Mr. Hill I know you were wanting to head out to the meet and greet that we had a couple of weeks ago to pick up a few pointers and couldn’t make it. I wrote up a few things and will shoot it by you. Take in consideration that sometimes I get it wrong, and what I say is just an opinion. Opinions vary from person to person, but its the best I can do. A-Z surf fishing basics.

Etiquette- Follow all laws, rules and regulations that vary from beach to beach. Pick up after yourself and leave nothing but foot prints. Give people their space. Spots belong to everyone but I believe in a first come first serve basis. If you arrive first it should be yours. I like to space out enough so you cant hit the other fellow casting or vice versa. Don’t cast into a bunch of swimmers.
Rods- I like the 9-11ft range. 9 in the wash and 10 or 11ft for casting beyond the breakers. The rods up front I shoot for one rated in the 2-6ou. For the bigger rods I shoot for a rating of 3-8ounce. Ratings are written on the side of the rod. Some popular surf rods are St Croix, Star, Tica, and Tsunami. Read up on warranties before purchasing. They vary from one year to lifetime.
Reels- An excellent source for reels is Alan Hawk.com. He does unbiased great reviews, although they aren’t perfect. Sealed reels are good for the salt and sand in the surf. The real repair guy named Steve from Haddrels says the closest thing to surf fishing conditions would be Mars. Meaning it is pretty unforgiving. Got a broken reel or need servicing he is the man. They clean up reels for 25-30 bucks. Good to do if they start feeling rough. Some reels that are sealed pretty good are the Shimano Spheres, Penn Spinfishers.Quantum Cabos are not sealed to that extent but are smooth as butter and are powerful refined reels. On A budget allot of people like Diawa BG’s but I have seen a decent amount of chatter that they are not particularly a good choice for the surf. These are people that have owned them, but they have a huge following by many that love them. For cleaning yo

I have watched Jerry a good bit over the last few months but I will check out the other channel as well. I have watched the videos of how to read the beach but I have yet to go surf fishing yet.

We started on the Mt. Pleasant pier yesterday and the wind was whipping and the current was really strong. No one was having much luck and we only saw 2 rays getting pulled in. Around noon we went to the Pitt street bridge where we managed to catch a flounder which was the only bite of the day.

I’m off work this week so I’m going to try to get back out later this week. Maybe fish the surf if I can.

Went to the cove two hours after high tide this evening. Pelicans and birds diving so i was throwing a 3 oz spoon but whipped off the spoon and ended up having nothing else but top water. Didn’t have any luck but saw lots of life of bait fish and it’s beautiful over there. I’m going again over there tomorrow.

A good 1st “lure” for fishing is a “popping cork” with 18 inches of line below to a hook with a “shrimp” look-alike on the end. Throw it out into 3 ft of shoreline and jerk enough to make some noise. Reel it in and repeat until you catch something. This rig is very popular and does well on the beach or in the creeks.
