Have any of you been following this? They departed this morning, 3 teams this year, Hells Bay Boatworks, Yellowfin, and Panga. Seems like a really cool thing to do.
That looks like fun. I wonder how much gas they burn.

the panga shot right out into the gulf
The first year they ran it I believe they all threw in the towel, some nasty weather blew up from my recall. I couldn’t imagine how sore they would be after days of being beat around like that.

Look at where Jesus went to pick people. He didn’t go to the colleges; he got guys off the fishing docks.
Nothing about that looks fun to me .

I think that the Yellowfin and Panga are both tillers, which is nuts to me. I can’t imagine trying to do an endurance event like that, especially with potentially rough weather, with a tiller.
I’ve also heard that Panga is running a 10-yr old boat that they took on a trade-in. Talk about some confidence in their product!

would defiinitley be good for showing durability of the product, but wouldnt be for me

The tiller thing they’ve figured out. The first year, team Yellowfin rigged up some kind of rope system to keep the thing held in place, and supposedly this year they have a tension system of some sort to use like a cruise control of sorts to keep motor from turning.
The Florida Skiff Challenge facebook page just posted a picture of the Panga with a hole in the starboard side of the hull a few feet back from the bow, dripping water sitting on a trailer. They’re out.

Some of those tillers have a hydraulic steering system and even push button tilt/trim…not sure if these guys are running that type, I just know that they are available

They posted up an explanation on their Facebook page – evidently they went with the 10 yr trade in boat because they used to use a different (lighter) layup, and they thought it might work out better for a “race” boat vs. their new layup procedure. Light weight layup plus 115 miles in 8 ft seas led to a cracked hull.
I think next year will be pretty interesting, and I’ve heard that they are thinking about limiting the teams to tiller-only.
