Can anyone advise rigs/bait to catch flounder. I used to know how to catch them but I can’t seem to find them. I’ve tried bridges, inlets, creek mouths. caught one by accident once. are they in yet or do I have to wait for the water to warm up more? any info would be appreciated. catch um up…Mike
I’ve always caught them “by accident” on everything from live bait to grubs and DOA under a cork. I’ve had the best “luck” in creeks close to the bank where the current wasn’t as strong.
Thanks loosewire for the info. catch um up…Mike
Iv’e had good luck with a Carolina rig and live mullet preferably 3 to 4 inches in length. Cast as far as you can and let it sit on the bottom and slowly bounce it along the bottom bringing it back towards the boat. Let it sit on the bottom between bounces. Dead shell banks, back sides of oyster beds any where the water isn’t moving as swift kind of sets up an ambush point. I’ve also had decent luck with a 3" white gulp shrimp on a 1/4oz jig head basically using same method as Carolina rig. I also think the water temp needs to warm up a bit more as well. Hope this helps!

In my experience, white colored artificials do well with the flatty’s. Also, they seem to like the redfish magic spinner rigs.

thanks for the input guys. I’ll give it a shot when the water warms up a little more. Now about spades. I’ve seen some big jellyfish wash up along breach inlet are those the ones you use for bait?
You can use dead jellys, the fresher the better. When the water reaches its hottest point of the year they can be found inshore. You can also catch them on chunks of fresh shrimp. They are way offshore right now.

I caught one that was shy shy of legal in early March with a mud minnow on a jig head. Was trying to catch reds.
I sent u a mail. You have to fish for flounder as the primary target.Anything else caught is gravy.I learned from the best.Expect to make your own flounder rigs and loose maybe 10 a trip.Where u have to fish for flounder is nasty.

seen a baby one today hanging out on some oysters before leaving work, was only about 4 inches…didnt notice him until he moved… he blended right in laying on top of oysters

OK guys here is what i learned from Rick.He made his own flounder rig using a Colorado #3 spinner blade. He uses 20 pound test line and attaches a small swivel on one end followed by a long shank hook on the other end.Between the swivel and hook he has a blade on a clevis and 2 red beads. From hook to swivel the rig is about 10 inches long.He uses a 1 oz bullet weight that goes on your reel line before u tie it to the swivel.Finger mullet hooked from lip to lip is the bait of choice. Now find some rocks on low tide or any structure that leads to a flat and check out where you may be able to fish when the tide comes in.Throw out the rig and start a slow as death retrieve. If you feel a bump wait 10 seconds before you raise the rod and start to reel in.Big flounder will hit the rig hard.Smaller flounder not as hard a hit.The flounder must turn the bait around to swallow it head first. That is why you wait 10 seconds before you pull in the rig.Fish nasty spots because that is where the Flounder hunts.Make at least 50 rigs and using the winter pipe cover stuff wrap your rigs on that and secure the hook into the pipe wrap.Expect to lose at least 10 rigs a trip.Wayne sells everything you need to make the rigs.Wayne has a place behind CVS on Parsonage rd on 61.He has a BASS mail box .Pull in the drive way and u will see his trailer.Need info call me or mail me anytime.Hope this helps you out.I can meet you someplace one day for lunch and show you this simple effective inexpensive flounder rig.

When the bait fish come in try a finger mullet (2"-4") on a kahl or circle hook (3/0) dead lined with a split shot up 30" (weight depends on current). Fish very slow. Fish will bit slow and just drag away. The bigger ones will take the easiest so give them time to take and swallow bait before tighten line. Also have had good luck w/ white Gulp shrimp on jig fished very slow. Good Luck…
Great info Stonoman. Thanks!
Some folks take the flounder bling to extremes, like this:

Pungo 120
With all those beads losing 10 rigs a trip could get expensive after a while!
