flounder fishing

Call the law! Nice night! great picture!

Ha,ha…don’t need the law. 40 flounder all over 14", 6 redfish all in the slot, 1 trout about 20 inches, and the 2 sheeps were before there was a length requirement. Me and Dad threw them over the side of the boat right before I came over to Okinawa…aka Okitraz; hate this sorry rock. Can’t wait to get back to the good ole USA.

Man, that looked like it was one hell of a night. I haven’t been gigging in well over a decade probably.

must be a rush putting all them fish in your boat. thats dinner for two months how many times a year do u do that well? is that load in charleston?

Yeap…they were caught in the Charleston area. I really don’t know how to say this with out sounding way overly confident, but there is no one in the State that can beat me with a flounder gig. I’m not trying to piss off anyone with that statement. I just have been flounder gigging since I was a little boy, and I am very very good at it. That was a slow night for me with generally all the same sized fish. I like to bring home a haul from time to time of 40 flounder with the smallest ranging in the 3lbs range up to 9-10 lbs.

No, I go a few times through out the year and bring home a good legal haul like this to last me for a while for me and my Dad. We fillet them and bag them in quart sized zip lock bags. Once the bag is pretty full, we fill the empty space with water and freeze them. Since the fillets are frozen in water, they will last a very long time with out freezer burn.

I only catch what I need and I try to pick the best nights to go every now and then. I like to eat fish and put some away in the freezer, but I also like to let a lot of fish go grow up for the futre of fishing.

Another thing…flounder gigging taught me how to catch redfish and trout on a rod and reel. Over the years, I have pushed just about every inch of IOP, the Wando, and the Charleston areas. In doing so, I know what all the banks and structure look like. Although there are subtle changes every year due to the river moving things around, most of the structure stays the same. The redfish and trout like a lot of the same places and structre that the flounder like. And, flounder gigging has taught me how to catch more fish on a rod and reel.
