Flounder Gigging. For it or against it?

I first started flounder fishing with my uncle Rich at the age of 8 in Pawleys Island. He didn’t own a boat so we just fished from the bridges. The man could catch flounder, so we always did well, but he was always saying how every year the fishing was getting worse because the flounder were being gigged out.

I have no idea if there is any truth to that or not,
But to this day I have never gigged a fish and I personally refuse to do it.

I was wondering what everyone’s opinion was on flounder gigging?

Can’t say I’ve really given it much thought but IMO there are
probably 20 or so bait slingers to each gigger.:stuck_out_tongue: Plus gigging is
shallow water verses all depths, All in all :question::question::question:

Ok, I’ll say it out loud - I’m against flounder gigging.

I’m against sticking them anywhere but in the head. You mess up perfectly good fillets when you hit em too far back.

To gig flounder, you have to have the right tides, wind, water clarity, and hopefully not any early morning obligations the next day. With all that, you still aren’t guaranteed to see fish. IMO, it’s fishing. And I’m all for it.

They don’t catch baby flounder, just “hog chokers”, sand dollars and look downs.

What Fred said. I quit dragging years ago, but I don’t recall catching any flounder. Lots of hog chokers and tongue fish, but no real flounder. There were lots of other small fish in the net, though.

O soo good.

All for it. Lots of things have to line up to even get to go. Then, getting to battle others wake, and everything else gives em a fair chance. I’ll take a Mon-Thursday low tide bout 4 in the morning.

Tigerfin, We actually did catch a couple of legal size flounder on the last drag of the the season. 3 to be exact with one undersized that I personally released so the seagull wouldn’t eat it. I ate the legal ones! along with a dozen nice whiting. I ate them too!
