Fly swap

I have seen this done on other boards before. Basically if we can get 10 people to participate this is how it goes… Everyone who signs up decides on a fly pattern to tie. Clousers and such. I am not the greatest flytier in the world but can tie them. Everyone ties 10 or 12 flies and sends them to me and I repackage everyones flies and send them back out or we can meet somewhere to exchange them. Signup is important because we dont need 10 people tying olive and white clousers,(which I will be tying)…If people are interested let us know. It could be epic and OOC

Sounds like a good idea Fritz. You can count me in. I’m not a great tier either but I do catch a fish or two on the ones I do tie. A couple of years back we had four or five guys meet and tie up some flies. One of the guys was a pro and really did some works of art. I like simple because it ticks me off to throw a nice deceiver and have a blue rip it to shreads the first cast. Let me know the when and where’s. Thanks!

Since I live in the mountains I have not tied any saltwater flies. I would be glad to trade some freshwater trout flies if you guys might be interested. I would love to tie some clousers and such (even have Bob Clousers book which is really good) but don’t have the equipment (hooks, bucktails and such).

Fritz,
Ive done quite a few on these on another board, and I always love to see this done. Usually the way it works is that you pick a type of pattern, for example in freshwater, wulffs, parachutes, nymphs, etc… and everyone ties a variation of this pattern. Some people will opt to tie the standard, but if you have a modified version which most of us do it is usually cool to tie your own version so that you can share it with others and visa versa.

I think maybe like a clouser variation, a shimp imitation, and wild card would be cool, that way each person only ties 3 patterns, and depending on how many people you just multiply…

Im in, and the patterns above are only a suggestion, this is your swap so ill tie whatever works best for all…

P.S- ive never done one where we all meet up and swap, but i really like that idea, ive been waiting on some flies from a swap to be mailed to me since april, so sometimes the mailing thing can backfire and becomes a hassel for the person responsible… not to mention it would be great to meet all of yall in person.

Im interested, but would like to know what kind of category we’re shooting for. Mixed bag may be cool to see, but it might not be all too versatile for our specific area. I’d prefer something for the salt.

We should see how many are interested. Clousers are easy to tie and good for this area. Different colors would be what we want from each person. I tie a chicken clouser and an olive and white mostly

I may be interested also.I would rather tie the same type flys.I can tie a shrimp type pattern.

fishbowl ties sone nasty schitt…

i’m in, for some big gaudy clousers. chartruse and white, or e-chickens

i tie a copper and brown clouser that produces well this time of year, and i have a pretty mean shrimp as well, if yall want to do a saltwater “wild card” or just a fly you made up that catches fish in salt water i think that would be a cool way to sample everyones different approaches to tying. just a suggestion.

Count me in…

Tying up a few of our favorite patterns and maybe accompanied by a brief discription of how you have used it and on what types of fish would be great. I tie clousers, not like the book, but they work. I also tie a little gold wolly bugger looking thing that I call the gold standard that slays the reds in winter. I think all of us have favorite flies that have evolved from popular patterns with our own personal touches. I have trolled the craft shops for years looking for the consumate tying material. Anyone ever use pipe cleaners? There are some good ideas floating around here.

yeah half of my materials come from craft shops and just stuff i find on the floor or behind the fridge:stuck_out_tongue: I think we should probably start maybe a vote for what types of patterns we should tie… how bout this

1- clouser minnow variation (your favorite color, or style)
1- shrimp immitation
1- wild card (something you innovated, or tweaked that is uniquely yours)

if anyone else has a suggestion please speak up, or just throw a yes or no vote… also fritz i would only presume that you have the ultimate vote, or veto since this is your swap… what say ye lets get this thing rolling so i can start tying.

I am definetly in for a swap , name your posion

count me in

Count me in, i’m down with the clouser variation, shrimp and personal touch flies. And to go ahead and get started.

Ok looks like there is enough interest from people to make this work. The numbers look to be around 12 people that want in. Now we need to have a signup type thing with the fly you intend to tie so that patterns are not duplicated. I think Clousers are what most people can tie but if you can tie something else and want to feel free to do so. I plan on tying an electric chicken type fly. Once we get them tied we can then setup how we plan on distributing them. 2 possibilities, Meet somewhere or everyone mail your flies along with a return envelope(postmarked) and I will send them back out once all patterns have been received.

Alright, so are we all just picking one pattern? Or are we tying all three per person in the swap :

Also here is the list i have so far:
CaptFritz
CH Allen
Affinityfish
5151
Marshmellow
Calibouge
Fishbowl
Flyreds

And With me makes 9 people so far. if we tie one pattern that will be 8 flies per person, if we decide to multiples say 3 it would be 24 per person and each person would get 24 flies in return… but its up to yall.

Did i leave anyone out?

Also i vote for meeting up, it will be a good excuse to get a good community of tyers together… a rare thing in charleston.
