Good morning all. I was trying to do some research and learn about flyfishing on HHI. My wife and I will be taking a week long trip down in a couple weeks and I was hoping to get a shot at some fish with my fly rod. My wife booked me a charter with supposedly the best flyfish guide in the island 6 months in advance only to have him call 2 weeks prior and say he decided to go on vacation. In exchanged for bailing he set us up with his “best friend” and managed to pay $500+ and caught one red fish about 10 inches. I had a charter set up the next summer with a different outfit and he completely vanished once I got to the island. Quit answering his phone and never returned calls. I later heard some not so great stuff about this captain from locals. At this point I am not interested in attempting to charter anything because I specifically want to fly fish and thus far my luck has been non existent.
So my question is, what can I do by myself without these guys? I’ve heard of people wading in different areas for tailing reds. I’ve also heard about different brackish lagoons in sea pines (which is where in staying). Anyone have any recommendations?
