Folly 10/28

Had about 3 hours to get out, hit a couple of spots on E Folly, caught the tide just about fully high and just through the turn.

Fished shrimp on a Carolina rig, caught a decent whiting and 6 reds. The reds ranged from 12" to about 4 lbs.

Had a bunch of bites otherwise that I didn’t hook, but I may have to downsize my hook. I’m still fishing a 1/0, just don’t have confidence in fishing the smaller #2’s like some of y’all, but I might try it.

The reds must’ve come through in a school, when I caught them it was “bam, bam, bam”, then they were gone.

I think I’ve posted this pic before…38" on a #2 hook, 15lb. Mono…smaller hooks can catch MORE fish.

My opinion…could you agree?

Pretty fish, I’m going to have to bite the bullet and do it.

You’re using a standard J hook, right? What model, is it an Eagle Claw?

I normally buy the 40 count shrimp at Crosbys and split them into halves or thirds, seems like even doing that the point if a #2 hook would be completely buried in a piece of shrimp, but I’ll try it.

Eagle claw 084 #2 plain shank j-hook. I always double hook my shrimp pieces shell on. My points are almost always buried. Trust me, even a small Whiting will hook itself. They do rust quickly after use, I don’t reuse them.

Thank you, I’m going to have to go hook shopping.

dparker677…why a j-hook? Why not a circle hook?

I use circle hooks occasionally, My Big Red rigs I use circles, (laser sharp L2004EL 8/0) which I only start using in Oct. or so. And sometimes in the spring/early summer when the Trout are in the surf good, still only a #2 (L2222? I think). I use very short leaders, J-hooks are never a problem.
