hit the beach with the girls today and only brought the light rod with a jig set up intending to hit the groins for a bit as the tide came in for the early afternoon. after some boogie boarding and tide pool/sand castle building with the midget i walked down the beach to cast at the rocks and wood for a little bit. well after about 15min i hooked into a solid fish that i could not stop with my light tackle and after a minute or so of the fish pulling me into the structure i see the tail of a solid black drum splash the surface, just before my line parts on a piling oh well. put on another jig and make a few more casts that yielded a 7" whiting that ate the jig not the tiny shrimp teasers? moral of the story, although bait is in my experience almost always more productive that artificials there are times (clearish water/structure) when you can catch nearly any surf species on a jig or some other artificial. we just dont have the conditions that frequently.
