Had to get out of the house and did a quick run to Folly beach county park. Fished about 3-5pm. Incoming tide, cloudy, used cut shrimp on double drop rigs. The fishing sucked! There was a guy fishing next to me from Chicago who said he was catching Sea Trout on cut mullet. While I question if this is possible I might not be the one to judge as I caught nothing with my fresh shrimp presentation!
Had alot of those days!
I caught plenty of trout fishing strips of mullet in the surf. I think it’s the shine of the skin side and the movement caused by currents, makes it look more like a live fish.

Mr. Sulcataman what is the best time of the year to target trout in the surf ?
Biggest trout I ever saw caught in person came on a cut mullet during the mullet run in Murrels inlet. Was a solid 7 pound fish a friend of mine caught. I was told by an older guy that trout are a lazy fish and will follow the blues around and pickup the scraps.

anyone ever have any luck around the jetties on folly park?
Whiting strips work great for Specks, make them about the size of a finger Mullet. The wave and current action make them seem alive. When the Bait show up in the surf, the Specks are right behind. Best time for Trout?..70degree water temp, around the full moon, late in the day.
…baitbucket, I have never fished out in front of the park. I have stopped by there many times and looked around…never looks “fishy” to me. Next time you are down that way move up the beach a bit, 9th-6th. Had some good days there. We don’t get out to Folly much these days, it’s a little longer drive for me.
Caught a pompano yesterday on Folly. Was kind of shocked. Caught a few silver trout, but no specks.

I did not target them. Just some days they show up. Mostly late summer into fall. They are mostly very nice size in the surf.

Thanks for help Mr. Parker and Mr. Sulcataman, much appreciated.
Many folks will tell you to fish cut shrimp or cut mullet. With a double hook rig, I use one of each. Black drum prefer the shrimp while a flounder or trout is more likely to hit something shinny, like a strip of fresh mullet or whiting. Reds will eat most anything.
