These pictures remind me of the ones I have seen of Redfish in some of the books about them and why they were almost fished to the point of extinction. The very reason all the rules, regulations and limits were put on them. Even though not illegal now, if this kind of slaughter continues we are well on that road with the Flounder.
Envious, you must be kidding. If they were caught on a Rod and Reel I would be envious. The only thing I feel when I see these pictures is sorrow for what’s going to happen in the future to this species and the coming regulations to protect them.

Have you ever witnessed what shrimp boats do to the marine environment daily?

www.baturinphotography.com

Great point! Many of you may not realize this but there was once a healthy reef system and even coral right outside the jetties and somewhat into the harbor. What happened to it? Shrimp boats dragging their nets. Longlining for any species of fish is another practice that needs to be curtailed.

All you dogooders amaze me. Sellsfish,Phin and others fight for your rights to fish . Neither one of them have been out that many times this year and probably keep less than half of the fish they catch. If I had a boat, I would be out there as often as I could . That doesnt mean that I would keep all the fish. I love to fish and love to eat
most different kinds.

There are SC commerical fishermen that are been going out of business because of all the stupid laws that are being passed. Most making these laws probably dont know squat about fishing. They need to listen to the people that are out there fishing, but no they wont do that. Before you know it , you wont be able to fish for nothing.

Enough of my rant!

I think I might go gigging again tomorrow night…

There are sooo many flounder out there, it’s just crazy! Knock out 40 in a nite in 2-3 hours. Mother nature protects the fish. I haven’t been because of the wind in 2 weeks. Bout to go to work the next 4 days, so that will also save a few.

I have witnessed what those awful shrimp boats do, started as a striker when i was 12 and worked every summer until 18 and then full time until 28.I never saw any evidence of a coral reef nor do I think the coastal waters of south carolina would have contained a living coral reef.
How many flounder have you caught by hook and line this year?

I have never seen so many flounder as now. Can’t go gigging without seeing a hundred 5 to 8 inch flounder. Sells, I just got my rig set up and would like you to go on my boat with me one night. A very simple rig with a sweet Honda EU1000i super quiet generator and three 300 watt below the water lights that are extremely bright.
Lets go!

Could never figure out why people cant state their point and stand by it without bringing something else into it as a distractant(is that a word:flushed:). … and using something else as a “but look at this…” …ok…for instance… there are a lot of shrimp boat haters out there, and here, we all have been down that road before in debate…guess the folks who hate them hated them all their lives right…never went on one, never bought shrimp from one, never ate shrimp from them…never liked to see them coming in after a days work and it made them realize they were living in the lowcountry where shrimp boats have been a way of living for many for years…and there are even those who would love nothing better than to see them all gone once and for all.Well looks like we’re on our way to that “one day”… but remember…we may all lose our rights to do what we love one day.

I love going gigging with my daddy. And we are selective in the fish and quanity we take. I will go out on a limb and state my opinion here and also put my head on the block by saying …I wish they WOULD make it a 10 per person limit/ but with a limit “per boat” to allow for 2 or more giggers. But thats just my opinion. Im too old now to care about getting yelled at…just stating how I feel which is my right I think…and you have a right to disagree.

There are a lot of things people dont and cant agree on…but wouldnt it be nice if we could state that without slinging mudd in the process.

BTW…Nice Flounder guys. Glad you had fun.

I love gigging and thats awesome to get that many. Penfishn is right, somebody can hate on one thing one day and then next year, " hey I think I wanna try gigging". And just think those are just the flounder that are on the bank in 1 ft of water. Think about the other 99.9% of water that you didn’t touch, that just shows how healthy the population is!!!

I don’t think he is talking about anything like the Great Barrier Reef, but there are plenty of corals “live bottom” in and around the jetties. Pulled up many corals at the infamous Grillage over the years and also in front of Morris Island. Not against the shrimp boats but just stating that it is possible that these corals were all over out there before the dragging. Just for info, how old are you? I am fairly sure you didn’t start when shrimping began, thus why you probably have never seen signs of the coral bottoms.

gigging spotails/redfish is really pretty sad

You are entitled to your opinion, but I would like to know where your logic comes from. How are the 3 redfish I have killed this year a problem? All three were eaten (two by my mother and one by me). Other than mullet, redfish are the most numerous fish in the harbor. All winter the Bottlenose Dolphins gorge on them. How many redfish die each weekend from gut hooked or exhaustion after “release”. Obviously you have never tried to gig a redfish while it is warm…not that easy, and going gigging with my son is a blast. I’m sorry that you think it is sad, but I think it is a good time.It is strange how ethics come out over one fish and not over another…I bet you have one of those pretty little redfish stickers on your truck that say “Join ABC” or something like that. To each his own.

You’re a commercial. Thats why your banging 40 flatfish every night, right? But why stab a lowly redfish, which you cant sellfish and for that matter really doesnt taste that great?

FYI, the guys in Join ABC, saved this fishery. You should show them some respect.

Are you from here? Just because you don’t thi

Several years ago, we were lucky to break 20. It was just a bad year for gigging. I don’t know why. The year before was great and years following have been great. There was also a horrible shrimping season in there somewhere. There are many natural forces at work, and we can’t name them all, much less predict them. However, when multiple giggers can harvest from the same area, then do it again the next night, that tells you that what is being harvested is a small percentage of the population. We have not seen a decline in the flounder population, only pictures of big hauls on the web. It is understandable to be watchful and concerned, but let’s slow down and think before we force our wishes on others with laws and guns.

I’m with sells, probably shouldn’t post big hauls - they get the haters all worked up:stuck_out_tongue:

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people. V

I have been gigging for many years and I have never had a night like that. In my experience, that is hard to do. I’ve had a few nights where we probably saw 40+ fish, but most were undersized and we try very hard (to the point of passing up on fish that are probably legal to take) not to gig undersized fish. I might get to go 2 or 3 times a year and the best that I have managed is about 25 and usually get less than 15 (this is for 2 or more people) and many nights with none. Congrats on a good night.

I feel like this was directed at me…correct me if I’m wrong. I was mearly making a point to all the dramaqueens on CF that “destroying the fishery” is a relative phrase. If you look at how many

Wasnt directed at you at all…and sorry if you felt that it was…was just stating(again…just my opinion) that we are often real quick at times to beat people up and jump to conclusions for what they believe in or do.

Outstanding catch there my friend. A lowcountry tradition going back over one hundred years, and one I hope continues for another hundred along with dog drives, oyster roasts, and Carolina vs. Clemson.
