Folly lately?

I’m wanting to take a friend fishing and am lookin for a place to get some fish. Doesn’t really matter what, as long as we don’t get skunked. While I realize this is no guarantee but I at least want a shot. Hopefully set some rods out and wait while she works on her tan. Redfish would be great of course! But like some black drum or small fish along the groins would be cool. Whiting would be great. Just want some general advice. What bait? Tide? (What groin would be cool also(; …) I haven’t checked out the surf yet this season though, is it worth it? Thinkin ill scout it at low tidde this week before I take her though. I’m thinkin FM or menhaden on carolina rigs for redfish and flounder possibly. Shrimp for whiting, and shrimp on jig heads alonng the groins… I’ve never targeted whiting from the surf before (believe it or not) so just shrimp on a 1 j hook with drop rig, cast out far as I can? Live mullet for the shark rod? Thanks guys! Also if anybody wants to help me scout and fish at low tide this week i’d appriciate it!

I’ve been fishing the south part of Folly Beach between 6th and 8th street for the past month, and I’ve NEVER been skunked. Usually always catch lots of fish but nothing great.

Rigs:

  1. I use a double drop rig with 1 or 2 sized circle hooks with fresh shrimp. This usually results in lots of whiting and croaker. I’ve caught some pretty decent sized whiting. Caught about 5 pompano during this span and mostly all have been 1 pound or less. I make my own rigs which helps limit the amount of metal and additional tackle the fish may see.

  2. I use a fish finder rig with live whiting or croaker. This has produced nothing but sting rays, but eventually I know this will land me a really nice red of solid sized shark. I caught a massive sting ray 2 weeks ago. I battled him for about 45 minutes and couldn’t move him 1 inch unless he swam towards me. Got him close enough to get a look and I just couldn’t budge him 1 inch, so I snapped the line pulling him.

I usually fish during the incoming high tide and I wade out fairly far and cast my bait.

Let me know if you have any additional questions…

Good luck!!

I’m thinking about going to get either some cut squid, cigar minnows, or cut or frozen mullet. What would you prefer Hunter?

I’ve never caught a pompano, but I thought you had to fish for those very close to the shore. Are you catching them way out?

My bait is always in the surf zone and never past the breakers. Beaches here are so shallow it’s hard to reach deep water (plus I’m not trying to do that when I’m fishing for pompano anyway)

I’m also just using a 7ft rod so that also has something to do with my casting distance.

Thanks for the info. What size circle hooks are you using on the drop rig? #1-#2, or 1/0-2/0?

2/0 J or circle hook.
