Folly past few days

Monday was slow just caught a few whiting and bluefish.

Tuesday i caught another 40 inch red on cut whiting. A few bluefish and whiting.

Wednesday caught about 5 sharpnose. Some bluefish. Didnt get a single bite from around 11am-1pm.

Ill be back at it again tommorow.

I have also started using mono topshop on my reels.(havnt used mono simce i discovered braid 15 years ago) Im having a problem with the mono just jumping off the spool if i dont hold it tight when i open the bail. Can someone recomend me to some good topshop with less recoil or am i suppose to use fluorocarbon line. Thanks

I’ve been useing 50# Stren High Impact for all rubb leaders and top shots. Very tough, good and stretchy. If you are holding the line to cast and open the bail, the line shouldn’t spool off. Flouro will be worse + more $$$.

And MAN YOUR’E KILLIN’ ME!!! Some more good catchin’

Maybe the reel is overspooled, or maybe the line was put on there backwards. Mono has a certain direction it wants to come off of the spool it comes on when you load your reel up, much like an extension cord or a guitar cable. If the reel was spooled counter to this line memory, then that may be your issue.

No matter how many variables I have control over, I never expect a bite. I only hope.

Holding the line tight before your cast should keep it wound up on the spool just fine – it’s really no different than the reel being fully spooled with plain mono.

How long is your topshot? If it really drives you nuts, just cut it down to less than the rod length, then you’ll only have braid on the spool. Also, what’s your goal with using a topshot?

Great looking fish, and cool picture with the sun behind you!

Thats what i do is hold the line. I guess i just forgot how much i hated using mono. My goal to using topshot is a few things. For one i change rigs alot when fishing so i dont want to keep cutting all my braid up. Catching sharks to whiting with most of my rods. And also for abrasion resistance so when i shark fish i can just tie on a 3ft steel leader and ditch my castable shark leaders made from steel and mono. I dont go out trying to just target one species i like to catch them all.

I gotcha – yeah, in that case I’d just use a 6-7ft mono leader. Easy to deal with on the spool, and if you catch a shark or something longer than 9-10ft (length of your mono+steel), you’re going to want to re-rig anyway.

Gotcha maybe thats my problem. I have like 20ft-30ft of mono on.
