Saturday
I fished the tourney sat and didnt catch anything good. Some small whiting, blues and rays. Other people caught spades, blackdrum, whiting and pomps and a few spanish. Lots of 3ftish sharks taking rigs. Fishing was ok but slow mostly. Though i didnt win anything fishing i felt optimistic about the raffle so I stuck around till the afternoon and luck shined down on me and i won a spinfisher VI 2500 combo. I was actually looking at getting a good 2500 series combo and thought about the spinfisher vi, but it was out my budget so i held of on getting 1 all together. Lucky lucky me a free combo and it was one i had been wanting. Also with a random cast i hit a cobia on the back with a spoon and spooked it out the water.
Monday
Riding high off my raffle win on Saturday i step on the pier this morning with luck on my heels, the main reason i wen was i felt lucky. I fished a trolley rig and a popping cork and had a artificial rod for gotchas and spoons. First bait on the trolley got hit in like 20 minutes and it was a solid spanish in the 4 to 7lb range but it pulled hooks. I had a monster hit on my popping cork but jumped off when i gave it a ton of drag because it ran under the pier and out the other side. I lost what a few eduacated guessers called a king, it was a mackeral for sure and seemed way to big to be a spanish but might of been a jumbo. I ended the day with 4 or 5 spanish in the 1 to 3.5 lb range and 5 bluefish up to 2lbs.
All in all a good time with a few fish mixed in. All the best bottom fish were caught closer in and the bottom fishing at the end was super slow or super small in size. I caught 1 big ray at the end with a bottom fishng rig wy i was mack fishing over the 2 days and he new exactly how to break me off on the pier, my guess is hes a pier local.
If you go out there anticipate slow fishing with a few chances at some good fish or okay bottom fishing for smaller species like whiting. Help out if you can or get help if you need it, its part of pier etique
