My buddy and I have taken three trips to the folly pier this year. We arent having any luck with catching anything out there. On friday I was able to reel in a small jack fish, but besides that its been nothing but sharks and stingrays for us. I want to know if fishing of the pier is better than fishing the surf. Is there anything to be caught off the pier? I am using what I call normal fishing jig with weight at the bottom and two hooks branched out. Also using shrimp and squid as bait.
if you’re not catching target fish, then you should probably try the beach… sounds like your technique is fine, so maybe read up on horizontal barrier island fishing strategy in this forum while you mess around in the troughs on the rising tide on folly.
maybe also try using a “carolina rig” style rod alongside your “dropper rig” style and see if one works better for you. carolina rig can be fitted with either egg weight (rolls around) or pyramid (holds the bottom better in current). i tend to prefer the latter in the surf.
Sheepshead are all over that pier. Almost every pilling has one on it. Just use a normal carolina rig with a small circle hook and some fiddlers or some barnacles if you can find them. Fish right next to the pole in about middle of the water column

I walk the pier everyday, and haven’t heard any reports this must fall under the 10% catch 90% rule, and the 10% aren’t fishing … I might have to try myself some fiddlers here soon
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.
