Folly pier

Went out early this morning tide was dead low. So i caught a few croaker and sent them out on a trolley rig, water was muddy and nasty with green water slowly approaching so I went down the pier to try and find larger whiting in the surf. A fella flagged me down saying I was getting bit. I sprint back to my line and its screaming out I flipped the drag on my tourium 20 its still pulling line as I look up from my reel I see a splash look back down at my reel then back up to see a silver fish splashing back into the water and my line goes slack and I reel in two bent treble hooks. . . . My heart says it was a tarpin my brain says no effin way its only my second time ever trolley rigging out there. . . Opinions? Other than that mind f()(k it was (**() sharks and seagulls pissing me off to no extent then the muddy water showed up again and I left thinking of what could of been. . .

more than likely a tarpon…there has been several big ones caught…

ive seen a 6 footer get beached from the pier…def a possibility esp if it straightened your hooks.

Waldo, great to meet you out there, such a bummer about the one that got away. After you left, the water turned to chocolate milk and every croaker I put out was hit by sharks. One big one broke my mono as soon as I started to hand line it up. I moved down to the breakers when I got tired of losing rigs to sharks. I wish there was a good way to tell water quality without heading all the way down there. Still, always always beats a day at work.

For sure! Sorry there wasn’t more bait in the tank! Those sharks can go ■■■ themselves nothing more demoralizing than working your ass off with the time and effort to send a line out to get it bit by a 15" shark >:-(. . . If more stalkers would post up about green water vs brown it would save everyone some monies and more than likely not leaving them fishing by themselves like you and i today jmho. . . Theres good peoples here lets help each other out. . . I might get after them again this weekend but it was great to put a face to a name today

Ironskillet the only way I have known is to check what the wind direction is going to be. If its blowing in on the left side of the pier you can see the mud line coming. From the right usually no problems.

Chewy, thanks for the tip, I’ll take not next time I’m out and see if I can tell a difference. Wind speed makes a difference for sure - last time, trolly fishing was like kite flying. Ugh.

Might possibly have a day off from work tomorrow. Will anybody be king fishing to show me the ropes?

I won’t be back out there till possibly Tues. . . I did all my research online for trolley rig pier fishing. . . You need two rods a 10ft + is ideal for your anchor rod with an anchor attached to it and fighting rod with a conventional reel. Throw the anchor out as far as you can then set it. . . Then take your fighting rod with a steel leader attached to a barrel swivel and then use a slip rig (steel wire with a snap swivel and a 2-3oz egg sinker with two large tag ends) and put the tags through the barrel swivel and then clip the snap swivel to the anchor line and slide it down to where your bait is about 3-4" in the water. . . Sounds difficult but its easy if there’s anyone out there fishing they all are good peoples and will help out. . . .a fella Saturday came out went to throw his anchor out and his rod snapped in 3 places another fella loaned him his rig with an anchor and saved him from having to pack it in before he even got a line in the water

I should be out there Tuesday. I’ve been itching to get out there since i got home, but the whole family thing has kept me from fishing… leave the country for a year and it seems like everyone has something for you to do.
