Folly Shark Fishing

What do you guys think is best? Fishing the 2 Inlets to the folly river or straight out beach front?

I caught a nice Blacktip last year from beach front near County Park. Are my chances better yaking baits out into the inlets for the monsters? Please let me know what you guys think.

What size hooks would you use? Are circle hooks best for shark fishing? When you do hook one and bring to shore, do you just cut the line or attempt to get the hook out? The last one might be a stupid question. I just feel bad about leaving the hook in even though it will eventually rust out.

A decent pair of bolt cutters will do the trick and help give you some distance if you can spot the hook. If not, cut the line and back in the water she goes? Always better to have at least 2 people so you can have better control of the shark.

Wherever you choose will produce sharks. Just avoid people, they are ignorant, and never leave hooks unless necessary in the sharks mouth. Many have been found with deformed jaws and diseases because the hook was left in. You need that dehooker and a pair of bolt cutters that you can cut the hook wire and still pull the hook out if you can’t get it out otherwise.

Having sharked the beaches for 3+ decades I can’t count the number of people who have come up to us, seen the big outfits and then come up with fantastically creative stories of massive sharks they or a friend have landed on a local pier of beach. It usually only takes a couple questions or just putting 2 and 2 together to confirm they are full of horse hockey. For some reason trying to impress us seems to be the goal of these yahoos. I just nod my head and try not to laugh in their faces.

Most amazing story I ever got, “We used to catch HUGE sharks down in Florida”…yeah?..“We would catch big Lobsters (on a hook) and put them on bigger hooks”…“Caught all kinds of big fish with those Lobsters.”

Now I don’t know about you guys, and sure you could catch fish with Lobster…but why? Those folks seem to have had a few too many Buttwippers.

Best story i had heard was “We would tie a balloon on to a lifesaver (yes the candy) then tie that to the main line and let the current pull the balloon out as far as it could before the lifesaver dissolved. Withing minutes we would catch big shark.”

I got a fishing pole for my wife…Greatest trade i ever made.

Lifesaver, I guess with an offshore wind…it could work. :slightly_smiling_face:

A friend of my dad once told us the story of the first time he met his father-in-law. He and his wife (girlfriend at the time) met her parents at a restaurant for dinner. All through the meal, her father kept telling these wild stories of places he’d been, people he’d met and things he’d done. One of the stories was about shooting sharks with a rifle from a hot air balloon. Naturally, he assumed his girlfriend’s father was a bold faced liar. The relationship progressed, however, and he was eventually invited to her parents house. While examining their pictures on the mantle, sure enough, there was her father with the various people he’d claimed to have met, in the far off places he’d claimed to have been, and, with rifle in hand, standing next to a hot air balloon on a beach somewhere.

I take other peoples stories with a grain of salt, but I also know I have some of my own that would leave you thinking I was completely full of it.

I know that personally I can’t have any respect for any angler unless he has shot sharks from a hot air balloon.

Here’s a wee sandbar from a sandbar on Saturday. Fun on spinning gear.
