Folly Surf Fishing 7-25

Yakman72 and I headed out to the inlet at Folly near the lighthouse and rock groins around 7 AM. I brought my 8 foot Abu Garcia heavy spinning rod for sharks and blues with a 50 pound test leader and a 3 ounce pyramid sinker and my Shimano 2000 on my 6 foot 6 G Loomis with a Carolina Rig and one ounce egg weight for flounder, spottails, and such.

Yakman72 brought his cast net and we were using live mullet, frozen shrimp, frozen squid, and frozen cigar minnows as bait.

The first taste of action was when Yakman’s shark rod pretty much doubled over, shot out of the sand spike and darted off into the water. Whatever hit it and took it was big. I had a few really big hits on my Abu Garcia that shredded my cigar minnows and missed the hook. I think it was either a Bluefish or a baby shark.

Yakman managed to hook a small spottail around 11 inches along the rock groin with a carolina rig and shrimp we were fishing as well as a nice Sheepshead. I also got a nice Sheepshead as well. Yakman also managed to catch a 12 inch Sheepshead as well as a 5 incher in his cast net.

The catch of the day was a 15 and half inch Sheepshead (picture of me with it) that Yakman and I cleaned and split. That baby is gonna be my dinner tonight. All and all it was a fun half day with plenty of action. We didn’t catch as much as we hoped but then again we were just glad we didn’t get skunked as this was my first time surf fishing Folly.

nice report and good to hear about baa fish hitting…however that sucks to hear about yakmans rod. thats the reason i invested in a reel with a bait clicker to hopefully avoid that!

Bad news about the rod…

I fished Folly this evening on the south end between 6th and 8th street. Caught a lot of whiting and croaker for live bait.

Had a huge shark hit my bait and peeled off about 100 yds of drag and then I put my palm on the reel to slow the drag down slightly and he JUMPED out of the water and snapped the wire leader.

It was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. My heart was beating about 99 mph. Couldn’t believe it jumped out of the water… Unreal.

Guess I’m going to have to start making my own leaders and stop using store bought.

I’m fairly new to the area, I just moved here about 4 months ago, so I’m looking for some people to fish with. If y’all ever need an extra person just let me know.

Yea I’m to the point where I’m making my own leaders for myself because buying new ones is getting too expensive because I go through them so fast.

sucks about the rod, thats why i use baitclickers,or i use circle hooks on my spinning gear with the drag set low so they can run,and the hooking is already taking care of.

so far i havent had any trouble with the 80-120lb single strand wire leader and yes cheaper to make your own since its $3 for about 40 feet. ive seen the jumping blacktip once on a charter and YES gets the heart racing…however my story ended the same with a snapped line. probably trying somewhere tonight since we got off early though

Ohio, there were some navy personell down at the inlet yesterday. I have no idea what they were doing. Any ideas?

Yakman I use 3-4 foot pvc rod holders, 2 inches in diameter. I bring a small foldable shovel with me and dig a hole about 1 1/2 ft. deep. No shark will take this out of the sand! It’s easier and quicker than trying to put a 2ft… store bought rode holder in the sand and you can make 2 for under $10. Btw where were you fishing on folly? We need to fish soon!

Light travel’s faster than sound. This is why some people appear smart until you hear them speak.

I make my own and get 2 out of a 10’ section. I used ryans hammer to put in the ground far. And by the first or second set of groins, but if I would have had my shark rod later I would have pitched it out in the inlet I saw a nice sandbar over there.

yakman…saw em over behind the fort at sullivans island today and nope honestly dont know i kinda wondered myself. just for the record i caught the skunk AGAIN…looks like im hitting a suck streak for sharks.

Yea, they were just standing there and doing nothing the entire time we were fishing. It was really odd.

when you put your pole in your sand spike, back your drag off. so that when a fish does hit it has some give.

I live on 8th and arctic, and have yet to catch anything besides whiting and sharks. Came here from Long Island where I pretty much fished plugs on top water for blues and stripers. If any of you are looking for a pier/surf buddy I am generally itching to go. send me a PM and I will get back to you.

ive caught the skunk WAY too many times behind the fort at sullivans lately so next weekend im probably tossing the shark rod out there somewhere if you wish to join.

Great time ryan! Can’t wait to fish again. Stanjwarren, I don’t usually fish the surf, but I let ya know when I do.
