I am planning a 1 day surf fishing trip and as it stands I will be coming to Folly Beach for the 1st time. Any help with questions would be greatly appreciated.
It seems like most of the reports come from the lighthouse side of the island. Would you say that is the most productive area? Is parking an issue? It looks like the walk to the inlet is 1/2 mile or more. Is it work the trek or would I be better off not going as far and just fishing the surf?
I’m not looking for any secrets. I’ll be traveling over 3 hours so I won’t be taking anyone’s honey hole. You can PM me if that is better. I’ll be with a friend, who never fishes, so it is important to me to put him on something decent so I don’t have to hear about it the whole way home. Thanks again in advance.
I’m not the one to best answer your question but I will say that you “can” catch fish anywhere. If you don’t get any PMs with some good info, try a spot like 8th street public access and if they are not biting, hit another area. If you are going to be here the whole day you could make the walk out to the inlet at the lighthouse and just move around the beach in that area. Sorry I can’t give much better advice than that as I’ve only been here a short while and I’m trying to locate some solid spots myself. As long as you can catch some fish, your friend can’t talk trash. If you catch some and he doesn’t then you just boast about how good of a fisherman you are and that its all skill, and he just doesn’t have it

You will probably want to stay away from active renourishment areas. I’m not sure where they are working right now, maybe someone else knows. But guessing, I would say south (west) of the pier, surf should be clear. I like the area between 4th-7th streets west. Not sure when your trip is, but if your on the beach around the low tide, you need to find the troughs “ditches” that is where the fish will be. Folly has rock groins that extend out in the surf. Facing the beach, to the right side of these groins will have areas of deeper water. Not to close, you will hang up. Right now surf bite is hot, Whiting, Spot, Blue fish, Black Drum, Speckled Sea Trout, Pompano and of course Sharks are all biting in the surf. I would use shrimp for bait, keep your hooks on the smaller side than bigger. #2 j-hook or the smallest circle hook you can find.
Folly is not my only choice. Leaning toward Folly mainly because I have never fished there, good reports and the groins (I like to fish around structure when it is accessible).
A few more questions. Thank you for your time and help.
I was thinking about coming out to Folly early this Sunday morning and wanted to make sure I could pick up some shrimp on the way. Does anyone know what time Crosby’s opens on Sundays? Is mullet being caught in the surf?
Any updates on where they are at with the renourishment? Any area(s) to avoid?
This may be a dumb question but are the groins that you are referring to are just the jetties?
A groin is a stretch of rocks extending from the beach straight into the water to help prevent erosion. They are usually not very long. Trust me, I am a certified photogrammetrist by trade(map maker) #128521;.
Thanks FishingInTN, that’s what I thought. To my knowledge there are no laws against head lamps. Just don’t shine into houses and use red lights to preserve night vision. I frequent folly at night quite a bit.
Fished North Folly on Sunday morning until about 5 pm. Mixed results. Mostly whiting, a few black drum (1 keeper) and a spadefish on shrimp. 3 blacktips, a couple of blues and a slot redfish on cut bait. Could have been better but certainly could have been worse. Weather held up and was pretty nice day.
