Folly Surf vs. Pier

I usually take a surf fishing trip once a year, and looking through those pictures really makes me want to target big reds in the surf a little more this year. I’ve never surf fished at Folly, but that seems to be (just by reading Charleston Fishing) where a lot of people have luck finding the big bulls.

Does anyone ever fish from the beach on Folly, or is it mostly from the pier? Do you guys think that the main advantage of the pier is the fact that you can get your bait out in slightly deeper water, or is it the structure itself?

Thanks!

I do not know much about the pier, but I surf fish Folly Beach every weekend. Fish on either the far east end(morris island side) or the far west end(county park). You could also fish 6th to 9th west. Use a double drop rig with small hooks, and small pieces of fresh shrimp from Crosbys. Catch a small whiting and cut him up for bait too. Also, read DParker677’s recent posts in the forum, a sure fire way to increase your hook ups.:smiley:

do work live life

I fished there last weekend for the first time. Believe I was on 8th. Had a great morning until the weather turned. Caught 3 whiting and a bonnethead. I used shrimp from Crosby’s on a double drop rig as well.

I went out to the pier last friday. Some guys were out there fishing for reds, but catching big shark and rays on big chunks of mullet.

They said they had caught some nice reds early that morning.

Sharks and Rays…on nasty mullet? Huh…anyway, I haven’t fished off a pier since I was a young kid, so I couldn’t help you with that. Folly beach as a whole is one of best surfishing beaches around, unfortunatly the “hot” spots change with the tide. Just surfishing on a whim will be 50/50 productive or not. Tip, the sharks and rays also know where the piers are. Be patient, the Bull Reds will come. It’s still a little eary though. And I will have pics on my phone so I could show you what was bitting. Just sayin’…
