How do you guys think the surf will be this Friday?
Or should I try SHem Creek Park?
We went Tuesday at Folly and the water was real dirty with alot of trash and seaweed, I think churned up by the weekend storm. Hardly got a bite. Thinking about trying again Thursday or Friday, hopes it better by then.
Was on IOP today, lots of trash too, the upcoming new moon is causing 6’-6 1/2’ high tides pulling crap of the dunes into the surf. The storm didn’t help either. Managed a hand full of Whiting in a couple hours. And Blue Fish suck!!!

I’ll be taking my girlfriend’s dad out to Folly tomorrow afternoon and this weekend, tides look solid for some evening fishing. Will report what we get into, hopefully something fun.
Can you guys give me a good idea where to surf fish at Folly? Say I am coming in on Folly Road and am in front of the Folly Hotel.
Can you guys guide me from there? Like Ave. numbers?
Thanks so much
Jason,
A lot of people go and fish the north end near the lighthouse, just drive all the way down Ashley street until you get to the end. You will half to hike it a bit to get to the good spots. Personally, I think that just about any jetty up and down the beach will produce fish, but I haven’t gotten the south side totally wired yet. Also, the further you go in either direction, the easier it is to park and the less chance you have running into swimmers.
Big blues or little blues, dparker?
If you go to the left all the way down to the cul-de-sac take the trail to the beach that’s on the cul-de-sac and fish the last set of rocks that are by the no dogs past this point sign fish the tip of the rocks at the lower tides and besides the rock when the tide is higher. Usually good fishing around this set of rocks, but I have not fished there since the beach re-nourishment project.

fishguy98, when you do not want to catch them it don’t matter! Only use I would have for them is BAIT!! They are very good hook cleaners. Okay, back to Folly fishing. To the left I like the 7th-12th area. The surfers like this area as well. Fish north of them. To the right, 3rd-9th. The troughs in these areas are caused by geography and current. They are always there. They do move 1-2 blocks north or south depending on flow. Go near low tide, find the trough and fish the turn. Easy?
Here is a pic of the trough I fished Wed.
How deep is it inside that trough?
Thank you guys so much for all the help and tips. I am new to the area and new to salt water fishing. I have only pier fished a dozen times. I really do appreciate it.
I will head out tomorrow around 8:30AM and try a few places. I will definatly try out the spots btshipp, 40inchreds and dparker mentioned with camera in hand and report back.
Thanks guys
Fishguy, Wed. the tide was dropping, I would guess, crotch to hip deep? The Whiting bite was hot for about 30-45mins. then it got to shallow. Tried out deeper…BLUE FISH…went home. Was only out for maybe 2 hours. Jason29307, don’t get discouraged if you get skunked, the good days will come. Just keep the bait soaking. It is still kind of early. When I catch my first Speck, then It will be fun.

As for “blues” sucking. I have fished many, many many hours in the surf. Catch ONE blue fish and cut his worthless boney ass up into 1 inch and a half inch bait chunks and you will STOP catching blues and will likely start catching reds and or sharks or anything other thing rather than blue fish. Blues are NOT hunting other blues.
Secret tip number two… scrap the scales off of ALL bait that you use. Even mud minnows. Remember… it’s a secret.
ifly, I’m pretty sure Blue fish are very cannibalistic, they are agressive “frenzy” feeders and will eat just about anything. They do make excellent bait, agreed. But I have not caught blue fish with blue fish because I dont try to catch blue fish. I don’t fish alot of cut bait anyway. If they move in on me, if the fishing is good, I will move up or down the beach 20-30 yards to get away from them.

I fished the rocks right at 12th and cought a whiting and a silver perch that I cut and used as bait. No more bites after that.
I was using frozen shrimp. How does frozen squid do around here?
I am going out again tomorrow to surf fish. I posted in the match up if anyone would like to meet up tomorrow or any this weekend.
Thanks guys.
Jason
