If they are going to give us 1 fish/day for 5 days, just give us 5 undated tags to use when we catch them, along with a reporting requirement.
The State just went from dated doe tags to undated ,use when you can, doe tags- same principle.

Great point. Except, they know the fish kill giving you 5 days versus 365 to catch your five will work in the favor of the fishery. I catch more red snapper than many other fish with favorable creel limits year round.

Donāt throw out the baby with the bath water just yet. That is a long range forecast. If that system develops more in the gulf and shifts west like some of the forecast guidance suggests we may not be in as bad of a situation. Yāall are all looking at the same 1 model guidance which is far from perfects I gotta work either way so surely one of the days will work out.#128556;

You can catch them in 70 feet but the fish will typically be smaller, 1-5 lbs. Sometimes thatās as far as I can get due to sea state.

go target ANY other bottom fish OTHER than ARS, and youāll catch plenty.

Precisely
I donāt jig but I bet you could catch them that way. 100-150 ft over live bottom. If you find vermillion, usually 10 cranks above it will be reds.Best baits are a live pinfish, menhaden or small vermillion/sea bass on a carolina rig. I make ours with 4-6ft of 200-250 lb mono crimped in the middle. On the high side a 12 oz egg with sliding beads on each side of the sinker and a crimped chaffed guarded loop at the end. On the other side a 10/0 -12/0 mustard circle. Attach the loop to a snap swivel and you are ready to roll. This is also our live grouper rig.I like the heavier mono best so it twists less and if one side of the crimp is shorter, make it the bait side for the same reasonā¦less twisting. Once you find the vermillion, drop the live bait down to 15-20ft above the bottom. Put your pole in the holder and wait till its doubled over.The circle will hook the snapper by itself. Hope you get some decent seas to run out.

Tri, so when you say crimped in middle, is that creating a loop where the egg sinker is?
Thanks

Not great now, but keeping fingers crossed for improvement.

No Just add a crimp in the middle of the mono to act as a catch so the egg sinker doesnāt slide down towards the hook. From the hookā¦10/0-12/0 Mustad hook crimped, two to three ft of the mono, large crimp, 2-3 ft of mono with a sliding egg with a bead on each side and then a terminal loop which I like to chafe guard but probably not necessary.Sunday might shape up if that system in the gulf continues westā¦

You donāt have to get too complicated with the rig. Weāve caught plenty on 2 hook drooper loop rigs with 12oz bank sinker. Itās more important to fish a little higher in the water column like Tridog was saying. If your weight is hitting the bottom youāre too deep. Use plenty of bait on each hook and let the little āpeckersā have their fun. Donāt worry about all the little fish banging away on your rig. Wait for a solid hit. Start around 100ā and you should be able to find some. The public reefs will get picked over first so unless youāre the first one there the best bet is to hit a natural live bottom area.
Iām on call so I canāt make it, Good luck to all who can go.

Yes best method is always āKISSā. Lots of Reds out there and pretty easy to catchā¦ I like the live rig but you can definitely do well on dropper rigs as RDW explained. Hope the seas lay down for us!
