Ran south planning to make it a combination trolling, Diving, and bottom fishing day. Stopped at the first spot just inshore of the ledge just to see what kind of fish show was on the spot and it looked too good not to drop some squid down. Biggest triggers we have ever seen start coming over the rail 2 at a time. Seemed like no one on the VHF was doing well trolling so we kept at it. Caught a nice size dolphin that swam up to the boat on a bottom rig with squid chunks. Mark Brown gave me the numbers to this “wreck” years ago and i finally got around to checking it out (Thanks Capt!). Unbelievably its a airplane not a shipwreck. I found a part with a brass plate at about the 2:15 mark in the video but was too narced to read it at the time. Will do some research to try to identify it this weekend.
Ran back in to 100’ and did some more bottom fishing. Triggerfish were so thick they came way up off the bottom. We started catching them 10 feet under the boat. Literally sight fishing triggerfish. One of our guys reeled in a sandbar but we decided to do another dive anyway. Mark shot a Gag and a big 20 pound hog. I spent most of the dive watching his back and fighting off a very persistent bull shark. Grabbed some lobsters and headed to the hill on flat seas with a full box.
Very cool and great video! That picture of the shark is fantastic.
I’ve got the numbers of a plane wreck that may be the same one if you ran south. And old and long dead charter boat captain gave them to me, said he saw the plane crash during WWII, but he could have been embellishing. He also gave me the numbers to a German U-boat that’s really cool.
Les is supposedly itchin’ to go diving…you gonna come back with us soon? I told him it’s been too long since he’s gone down and gotten us some nice vittles. He agrees.
Amazing how many fish such a small bit of structure can hold. Turtle was awesome, especially that he just hung out with all that commotion. But the lion fish… yikes. thanks for sharing!

Is that U Boat off of SC? I read about one found off of NC, but can’t find anything about one off of our coast. Surely that old captain wasn’t talking about the one “found” off of NC was he? I know fishermen know things about the sea that haven’t been “found” yet. Just wondering if it is the same thing here or if there are two U Boats in the area.
We think it is likely a Corsair F4U. Would be really cool to identify the plane. May help write a little history or let a family know what really happened to grandpa back in the 50’s. I’ve reached out to some experts on Corsair aircraft but have not yet heard back.
Planning to dive it again when weather allows. Will use a scooter to blow sand off the wings and try to recover the object with the nameplate for ID.

Don’t disturb it or take anything off of the airframe. If it is a Navy/Marine aircraft the Dept. of the Navy still claims ownership of the wreckage and has aggressively pursued civil and criminal action against those who have disturbed their property. The SC State Department of Archeology may already have jurisdiction over the wreckage. It’s not worth the trouble. Just take some pics and make sure you post them.
The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.
