Fournette and McCaffrey sitting out bowl games

… to prepare for NFL draft / avoid injury.

Neither team is in a competitive bowl game really. I’m sure the major points of “play with your team” and “dont be a weenie” vs “gotta look out for #1” and “college wont pay you if you get hurt” are played out.

I am curious what you guys think of the following -

Does the playoff system cheapen other bowls to where this will be more commonplace?

Do you think if colleges paid into a fund for insurance against injury would you see less players leave early (before senior season or before bowls)?

If college players got paid (had college football as a job) would this kind of thing be decreased?

Good for them. I think it has more to do with playing in the Sun Bowl or Citrus bowl more than anything. Outside of the big 6, a conference championship, or the NC game I don’t think most of these kids care. Aside from the ones not going to the NFL, or those that need that game to get scouts one last look. Until they put a contract on the players to go along with their scholarship or pay them to play, who cares. They can do what they want. Kind of like the Pro Bowl. They’re a joke.

I wouldn’t care if Watson sat out for a similar bowl game this year. Not sure if he would, but I know I would.

They have a contract in a the way of a full ride scholarship. They took/agreed to that monetary value to play football, not sit on the bench while healthy.

Prove it.

Prove what?

I agree with Fish here.

And the school has every right to takeaway the aide moving forward. What’s the problem?

With there being 31 bowl games or whatever the number is the lesser bowls are going to have this happening. College Kids heading off to the pros will not risk injury and they will sit out more and more. The more kids that do it each year only open the eyes of future classes coming thru.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

I’m curious as to how their team mates feel. One may be happy, because he’s going to get some more PT, some may be cool with it, but some probably feel like they quit on them. They’ve both played in games that meant no more than this bowl game. Are they not going to the game either? I mean, the jet could crash too.

I wonder if the team next year will feel like he quite on them for not coming back a 4th year. The kid just dropped out of college, why would it matter what the team thinks. People make personal decisions based on themselves and their family, not Bubba Smith from Minnesota.

It’s pretty simple. Pay the kids to play, sign a contract with financial penalties for not playing or conduct, and keep the bowl game money train rolling. Or do away with all of them short of the playoffs and conference championships. The NCAA is skirting a fine line between education and exploitation. You really can’t hold it against these kids for working within the system that is in place.

It’ll happen more and more going forward…

Some players will prolly do so just to protect their projected draft position, regardless of injury… The last game played kinda sticks in one’s mind and if they stink it up it could cost them big time financially… If you are happy with your season’s book of work, why not just let it stand without a potential bad last game…

I just wondered how they feel, and if it bothers the two who aren’t playing at all. I always cared about my teammates. Maybe we’re different.

Wow, you are trying to compare your football situation to these folks?

LF is opting out because of injury. The dude needs to recover to be able to perform for the scouts.

And for CM, it’s all business. You are talking about a family that works with John Elway. He is smart, gifted, and elevated the team and his teammates by being on the filed with them. I doubt any of them care. Hell, his coach probably gave him the green-light. He is one of the ones that talked him into dropping out. Did you hear that right? His coach told him he should drop out of school.

I don’t think anyone is going to like the idea of it, but in the grand scheme of things it’s easy to put someone down for dealing with a situation you will personally never have to deal with. There’s no I in team and all that crap, but at the end of the day these kids are finally looking at being compensated for busting their asses for so long. I think the playoff system has cheapened the other bowls, but I also think there’s just too many bowls anyway.

Their scholarship is for the 2016 football season. if they do no honor that contract, they should be penalized in the form of return the cost of the scholarship.

That sounds good, but that’s not what is on their financial aide agreement.

Something tells me the McCaffrey family has given way more to Stanford than all of their scholarships combined.

That would be like Clemson asking Spencer Benton’s dad to pay back his tuition if he dropped out before the season ended.

I have no idea who spencer Benton is, nor do I know how much mccaffery’s have given to Stanford. But neither should matter when talking scholarships. I do not know what is in their financial aid agreement, but I’m sure they can’t just show up to practice and do nothing, and still receive it.

Either way it is a crappy thing to do. That school has spent a small fortune on you, man up and play the game.

So Geronimo would you be ok if Watson decided that he was going to sit out because he did not want to risk injury?

When the number of bowl games reaches 50, there will be plenty of NFL bound players that will opt to play in the newly founded Oahu East West FlagaTag Bowl.
