Friday Report

I put in late Friday morning at the Edgar Glenn boat ramp by Lemon island on the Chechessee River. Fished a creek and flat a ways up the Chechessee Creek on the incoming tide with artificials. Mostly z man plastics on trout eye heads. Caught one flounder about 13 inches in the exact spot where I caught an identical flounder a month ago. Could’ve been the same fish. It was on a mud flat in about 18 inches of water waiting in ambush as the current washed over an oyster rake.

After that I went exploring a little as the water got up on the flat toward the shore. It was a weak high tide so I didn’t expect this flat to be holding any fish. It turned out to be all mud bottom and I didn’t see any sign of redfish. I did see two gars about 2 1/2 feet long each just sitting still in the water column. I poled the boat almost on top of one before he eased a little to the right as I went by.

After a little more exploring, I went to a spot near Rose Island that always seems to produce. I caught two trout and a sheepshead there just after the tide turned and started going out. One trout was about 12 inches and the other was a lot bigger in the 20 inch range. She had some sort of red parasite on her side but I couldn’t get a good look b/c she auto released by the side of the boat. I thought the sheepshead may have been a respectable redfish but when I got him to the boat I found that it was hooked outside the mouth nearly at the belly. That made for a bigger fight than a 9 inch sheepshead would normally put up.

All fish released to fight another day.

All in all a great day on the water. The weather was fantastic. It was my first chance to try out the new Power Pole and jack plate that I recently added to the boat. The Power Pole is a game changer for sure. Once I got the boat in position I stayed there with the press of a button. It worked great.
