Hi I’m coming for a vacation to fripp island at end of May and was thinking about bringing my old bass boat, I’m a freshwater bass fisherman in general and need some advice on where to launch and a general area to fish ? I’ve always wanted to catch a Red fish but anything would be great to get the wife and kids excited . Is there any live bait I should try to catch or available close to buy ? Thanks
I can’t tell you anything about Fripp Island but I would give you this advice in general; get a good map and/or update your map if you have a chartplotter. The tides here change several feet between high and low and the bottom depth changes quickly and drastically. You want your time spent on fishing, not sitting high and dry waiting on the next high tide. Tight lines!
There is a boat ramp right before you cross the bridge onto Fripp Island. Google Russ Point Boat Landing.
The little market on the left before you go into Hunting Island usually has live shrimp and mud minnows. It’s next to Barefoot Bubba’s Surf Shop.
Thanks for the info.
Hi there. I have a home on Fripp and fish there frequently. You can put in at the Marina at Fripp or at Russ Point as described above. To put in at the marina is free but if you leave your boat on the dock or in the parking lot there is a charge per day based upon length of boat. Whether you put in at marina or Russ point you will likely fish the same spots. Out of Russ Point hand a right and there are a series of creeks in which to fish. Caught reds, trout, and even a spade back in those. From Fripp marina you head back toward Fripp inlet bridge and it will be a left once you get to Fripp inlet by bridge. You,don’t need your bass boat to catch a red though. Fripp has lagoons (with alligators) and reds have gotten in there. Likely the big reds out of slot. To fish these larger (bull reds) in the lagoons I use freshly caught mullet, cut in fillet “strips”. Put on bottom w/ as little weight/resistance as possible (no weight if stagnant water). Spinning reel 2500-3000 class 12-15 lb mono to swivel to 40 lb 2’ mono to a 4/5 hook, bait. Soak baits “on bottom” let the fish roll w/ the bait- way loose drag, make sure he has chomped before you set hook. Then just take your time, he’ll run at least 2x…keep drag just over snug.
For the south end of Fripp there is a point with some breakers. Go all the way down Tarpon Blvd. it will dead end at this point. On an incoming tide the water will come over those breakers and then into the back creeks. Can catch everything from whiting to who knows what else.
I could go on and on. I will be there week of Memorial Day if you have any questions. I am always around the marina in a 22’ sea foam green sea hunt. If you shoot me your email I am happy to give you my cell for any other questions you may have. Best of luck and tight lines.

A these lagoons accessible from a street or gc path? I’ll be down there this weekend and would love to put my kids on a fish.

Yes and yes. Had best luck on the ocean course lagoons.
Another “ok” spot is off the bonito bridge on and incoming tide but mostly smaller stuff there and gets s good bit of pressure from other vacationers

Thanks again for the information. I had a great day on the surf today , got my first redfish about 20lb on a finger mullet, lots of baby black tips, two rays ,a larger spotted looking shark about 2-1/2 to 3ft and to top it off another redfish a whopper I’d say was 25lb , maybe I can figure how to post some pics.
another option from the boat is to fish the sea wall on the north end of the island. At low tide you can find several rock jetties that extend from the sea wall. There is one Large Rock jetty as you follow the seawall all the way to the end where it meets the beach. Look at it during low tide to get and idea. Have caught a lot of flounder and red fish there. Good fresh live bait is best. You can put out a minnow trap on the boardwalk and have plenty in minutes. BUT… you have to do this on either side of the low tide.

Boat or no boat? I was just there last week. Caught sleeps head, flounder, Spanish mackerel, blue fish, spade fish, cobia, barracuda and 8’ bull shark. Some from a boat some not. Give me one specifics on your plan of attack and give suggestions

wow sounds like you had a great trip. I am headed down from the upstate on Sat. I will be fishing from land most of the week but did rent a skiff to take out and fish one day. I am taking my nephew who has never been out on a boat. I have fished some of the areas out of Russ Point before but mainly caught sharks. Would like to try and catch a few different species, Reds, trout etc. We are staying on Blue Gill and will try to fish the tidal creek at the end of blue gill as well. Thanks for the information.

Russ Point receives pretty good pressure, so I tend to always leave that area. Across, from Russ point on the way out of fripp inlet (can fish from up,on top or,from skiff) the rocks have some decent fish. Sheepshead there as well as reds but also some toad fish fish along that entire rock wall but mainly at the three jut outs two where houses pop out but also there very last on the point.
Also from ground, can he’d south to skull inlet and could catch small shark or flounder.
If renting a skiff from fripp ask them for a map to capers island. There you can fine great conchs but to left of where you would pull knot shore large mud flat and grass area. Reds there.

Thanks Ryan, I hope we will find a few fish.
