Gator Trout. Personal Best 25 1/2"

Fished SI a few hours this morning using mud minnows and had this big ole’ gator slam my rod while I was slow retrieving my mud minnow. Sorry for the sand on the fish. Was trying to take a picture really quick so I could put him on the stringer back in the water.

Carolina rig, 3/0 kahle hook, using mud minnows.

Nice fish, especially from the surf - Good work

Thanks, you guys. The way he was running, I thought it was a nice size red. I was beyond surprised, when I seen it was a nice yellow mouth! :flushed:

Nice catch! so what time did you start fishing and what time you end? I think I have to do the early morning too now to avoid crowd

I typically am on the beach before sunrise and leave around lunchtime. Also dependent on tide. If high tide is early morning I’ll fish the outgoing and first two of incoming and vice versa.

Very nice trout. Congrats!

How can you tell it’s a “him”? Thought most that length were "her"s.
What are the gender ID’s?

RedfishTailing knows, if he was the one that cleaned it. Any roe in there?

All I know to do when they are alive is to listen for drumming – I’m pretty sure only males will drum. I would guess that one was a female, just based off size.

Congrats-great fish!

above comments are correct regarding drumming for males and larger maximum length for females:

*note that these are average values for the month of May (beginning of spawning season = “birthdate”)

Indeed it was a female. Honest typo mistake in the original post

Indeed there was Roe. I was told to put it in flour and fry it, but wasn’t brave enough for that venture.
