Just announced yesterday. USC and Clemson choose people from academia, CofC chooses a politician. I’m not part of the sky is falling mentality that think this is the end of The College, but picking your Lieutenant Governor just screams good ol’ boy politics. I actually read up on him and he seems like an intelligent and fair person. The Civil War reenactment photos are just left wingers poking at right wingers, and literally mean nothing. I’m just concerned about how his past translates into being qualified to run a college.
The obvious agenda here will be forcing the MUSC CofC merger, which once again I’m in favor of, but I mean really…University of Charleston? Sounds so bleh…
Having spent the past decade of my life in higher academics, it’s not a very common thing for an accomplished academic to seek out higher administrative positions. The truly good academics are either gifted teachers, or gifted researchers… and occasionally they are both. Rarely do they add in the desire for anything administrative, so you end up with figureheads with “reasonable” credentials, but lots of face-recognition and good PR skills.
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.
Matt has it exactly right. With the political winds blowing so badly for public colleges around the state house, C of C needs McConnell even if the merger with MUSC doesn’t happen.
The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.
Little doubt the College made a decision based on political clout along with tight finances and talks of some type of merger they saw the need to position the school for the future. I would think he will let the dept. heads run the day to day education while he deals with the other issues.
I would rather have him and his political clout instead of some liberal egghead. McConnell is no dummy, he is a very intelligent and savvy individual. Being an alumnus will help as I think he will have the best interest of CoC in mind. I wish my son were going there as I think CoC has a bright future.
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.
McConnell is respected on both sides of the isle in the Senate. He follows the law and rules with no siding for the Majority. His ability to deal with all types will serve the College well.
Where do you think Harry Lightsey, Alex Sanders, Ted Stern came from?
Hint: at least 2 of them had a (D) next to their names.
It seems to me that you are really just bothered by the (R). OR, you are ignorant to what type of people have been successful at being college Presidents. Which one is it?
What amazes me is the “how can the state decide this, it’s OUR college?!” comments I’ve seen. It’s a STATE SCHOOL. I also think it’s funny how a few CofC students are protesting like someone just told them they had to use separate toilets and ride on the back of the CARTA bus.

Do me a favor. Stop. Re-read my posts, and quote where I made any mention of being concerned about him being a Republican.

Stop. Read my post. Check the word “OR”. I assume by your reply that you are ignorant to the profiles of many college Presidents. (and in the case of CofC—successful Presidents).

I like to read before the OR, the “Hint: at least two of them had a (D) next to their names” speaks volumes as to how you’re interpreting my opinion about McConnel. You, for some reason, are trying to pin the fact that I don’t like him as president of CofC because he’s a Republican. If you actually read my first post, you would see that I in fact do not not like him for the position, but am “concerned” (not irritated, upset, protesting, being a democrat, etc.) about how his past translates into running CofC.
Did I say that he was going to be a terrible leader? No. I’m well aware that former politicians have ran colleges. You know it’s okay to have reservations about someone’s credentials. Especially when the search firm was hired, and then totally ignored. That doesn’t make me a big republican hating liberal democrat.
