going offshore

I have a pioneer sf197 and I’ve been wanting to take it out to the 60. Been to the nearshore but everytime I want to go out farther its too rough. I’ve downloaded all the weather bouy apps and been doing a lot of research on wave height and perdiction. My questions is do the seas get alittle better the farther you get away from the jetties. I know thats a loaded question lol. Also if anyone has a sf197 what seas do you feel comfortable in going out in. Tks for your input.

Mouth of the jetties is known as the washing machine because of all the "confused’ seas. It usually calms down some what a few miles out. In your boat, I would shoot for waves 2 foot or less until you get comfortable with it. The 197 can handle worse than that, just wouldn’t be any fun.

I appreciate your addvise. Thanks

Look for a 1-2 ft day, if any such thing ever happens again. You can take that boat out 30 miles on the right day.

September through mid to end of October may be your best chance for this mythical weather scenerio.

30 miles… pssssshhhh… you got a pioneer dawg! chuck norris approved!

Looks for days less than 10 kt winds. Needs to be less than 10 kts by probably midnight before. Redstripe I totally agree. Nice to fish the ledge and back on 40 gallons.

Haha. I do like the pioneer but its starting to sound like I may need to upgrade to maybe a 22’

The water conditions at the 60 are no worse than sitting at the near-shore reef, you just have to get there.

I made the trip many times in a key west 1720 with an extra gas can, you should be fine if you pick your days as the others suggested.

Will 3 ft give you that much more? I have a 20 CC and need to pick my days. Dont think 2 ft would change my trips very much. But with getting older my body hates the pounding even more so I am even more picky.

I just see more people on this forum with 22’ than 197. I do like inshore as well so figuring that would be good size for both maybe. Doesn’t look like this wind will ever calm down.

It’s definitely a little big boat or a big little boat. Not the best at anything but you can do it all in it. Ideally I’d love to have a flats boat and something with twins. All it takes is money…

And smaller waves and less wind. SOL for the foreseeable future looks like.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

When I used to have time to fish…I would take mine regularly to y-73 and beyond. The seas do get better about 5-10 miles past the jetties in my opinion. They seem spread out a little. Work up to it. One of the last times I was out we saw plenty of 17 ft keywests at y-73 that I felt should not have been there based on sea conditions, to each his own. I have had some 20 foot bay boats pass me when I was fishing in 130 feet of water heading deeper.

The extra 3 feet difference between the 197 and 22 won’t give you a bunch of extra available days but it will give you a little more comfort while you’re there. Since you’re already in a 197 I wouldn’t swap for the difference. The fuel economy of the 197 and F150 is unreal.

It isn’t bad in a 222 with the F300 either.

Thanks for everyones input. What getting out of this is that it takes " time, patience and overall experience" Ill just have to pick my good days. I I do like fuel economy in the F150 so hopefully I’ll see yall out there one day when its not blowing 30mph.

Ive been slowly working my way to the 60 in my 22 bay boat. Made it to the nearshore a few times with no problems. Really want to try the 60. Seems like every time I pass the nearshore I get cold feet. Im in a bay boat, maybe I should stay in the bay!
