I have to go to West Marine first thing for a new VHF radio but after that, I am heading to the Edisto 40. I want to be on the water no later than 11. I can accommodate 2 people if you want to go.
I plan on drifting and bumping bottom.

Well give us a report!!
Went out and it was great. The waves were very small and I had the whole reef to myself. Caught a mess of bsb, a few vermillion, white grunt, and some others that I forget or could not 100% identify.
It was good to get out, I want to hit the 60 when the ocean permits.

I did not go. I didnt get anyone to come along and I hate to go myself or take one of my kids in case something happens and I cannot operate the boat to get back.
The wave report and reefcast looked great.

That was a good decision!
Wise move and thanks for the invite. If I had been down there I would have gladly taken you up on the offer. Out of curiosity how much wave are you comfortable in with your bay boat? I have had mine in 2-3 but not far out.

The worst I have ever fished in 41004 was showing 4.6ft@ 6 seconds. It was June 1st this year. Me and a friend wanted some BSB and it was the first day. We were both bruised and beat pretty good.
I have had it in what I would estimate were 5-6+ in the stono inlet. I was inshore close by and saw the big waves. I wanted to see how it would act. It took them pretty well but I would only do it again in an emergency situation. I had a friend in his boat close by if something bad happened.
Less than 3’ at 41004 is ideal and I feel safe doing it.

I have a 22’ Sea Hunt Bay boat. I have gone out roughly 15 miles or so from Hilton Head to the Betsy Ross and the Eagles Nest reefs. I have come to be more and more conservative in my approach to heading offshore. I have been out in 3-4ft, but they were rollers with a good period in between. I have seen some 5 footers suddenly pop up on the way out and it has scared the #$&^ out of me and chased me back in. (Most of the time the forecast was for 2-3’. My last trip out the forecast was WNW wind 0-5knts waves 1 foot. It turned out to be 2-3ft chop with 3’ rollers underneath. I have to run like a sail boat as the wave movement was hitting me broadside. I was afraid to anchor for fear of submarining the bow, so I drift fished hoping the waves would calm down. I called it quits at mid day as I figured I could only do 7-8 knots coming in.
The boat has performed great, it gives me confidence in the boat (not so much with NOAA, but…), but I have grown more hesitant in making the trip.

Thanks for the input Jczc. I have kept my boat mostly in the rivers and creeks and haven’t ventured out into big water too far. Living in Columbia gives me limited experience in salt water so I am gradually getting more comfortable with the idea of going out. Plus there is no Mary Lee in Lake Murray! Like your story implies a lot can change quick in the ocean.

I would go nearshroe but my Key West is a bit too small to venture out that far. I mostly stay around the harbor/bulls bay and the north edisto river. If you ever need somebody to tag along I wouldn’t mind making another fishing buddy!
