Good New For Cobia (Hopefully)

At a recent meeting of the SCDNR Marine Advisory Committee a motion was passed to be sent to SCDNR Commission for review and packaged for the 2016 legislative session. During the month of May inshore Cobia in St Helena sound, Port Royal Sound, and Calibogue Sound, if caught must be released. This will protect the Cobia during their spawning season. The motion further stated that individuals will be allowed one Cobia per day and three Cobia per boat, per day during the open season. The motion further carried that this change will continue for six years unless studies prove that the inshore Cobia fishery has rebounded in these areas. Again this motion will be presented to the SCDNR Board in October for their review and then to the SC Legislature hopefully scheduled for approval in early spring of ?16.

BRAVO!!!

Very good. Sounds reasonable to me.

Still an uphill battle guys…it has to get into DNR’s legislative package and then get into bill form. Then it has to pass House Agriculture & Natural Resources subcommittee and full committee, then go on and do same in Senate Fish, Game & Forestry Committee…unless (unlikely) there is a concurrent resolution in both House & Senate. Then it goes to House first…then, if passed, on to the Senate and then to Governor.

We all need to urge our legislators to pass this if it comes to them in bill form. And we need to monitor what they do to the language and what they tack on in the way of amendments.

See what I mean when I say we need a grass roots effort to demand the SC Legislature hand over regulatory authority to DNR…into the hands of natural resource professionals. If it were there, it would be a simple proposed regulation change and go directly for a vote…or could be implemented as an emergency regulation.

What a mess. We need regulatory authority in DNR’s hands.
Thanks wildlifesc

How do you determine if a fish is caught inshore or not? Honestly I think one fish per boat with a maximum size limit would be best. Slot regulations helped spottail tremendously. They could even issue some sort of trophy tag that would allow a limited amount of larger fish to be kept. Tag could work the same way alligator permits do.
