Not asking for any sweet spots… I have no problem going out a missing, and finding a good spot myself. I’ve just never really surf fished for reds. In that case, what are some good rigs and bait. Also, how far out are the hitting? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
8 to ten inch Mullet and a five ounce weight depending on current . Don’t be scared to cast in the white water cause that’s where they are caught nine today pics to follow!!! STUDS STUDS!!! This is the perfect time of year get out there they are everywhere!!!
Surfman is right. I prefer a carolina rig on a pyramid (or better yet, a flat “no roll” sinker).
Use a large circle hook, please. Regular hooks tend to gut hook large redfish, circle hooks nearly never do, and are quite easy to get a good hookup with.
For a rod, I suggest anything 7’ medium-heavy. I prefer my 7’ medium heavy Ugly Stik or my cheapo 10’ shakespear surf rod. 20 pound line at least is my preference.
I like my 10’ and 12’ surf rods equipped with old school Penn 140 Squiders spooled with 50pd braid. They have good casting range. Carolina rigs-60pd mono leader, large circle hooks and Sputnik sinkers.
Sounds like a heavy rig; but there are some very large inhabitants of the surf zone besides Reds; and I like to catch them too. Cut mullet, crabs, Whiting etc for bait.
Don’t lose many Reds with this rig; better to bring them to the beach for release than to let them break a light rig and swim around trailing line that will catch on something and make them easy chow for predators.

I use 80lb. mono on a 8/0 circle hook and a fishfinder with a 4oz. weight.
I’m so salt life I sued google earth for giving away all of my fishing spot’s.
Thanks for all the tips you guys. It seem the best method is using a fish finder/carolina rig with some heavy gear. Will be trying it out!!!
