Got the itch to see if a trout might be found on Folly island…so grabbed the Rod and the Trout box and went to Folly.Set up way down as far as you can walk as I used to do some years back and worked my way back to the area where that last set of Rocks…Yeah the ones where the path leaves the end of the old road (Coast Guard Base)…Now I learned many Moons ago that at this spot Trout could be caught in the winter depending on how much water was around with the everchanging bottom you contend with out there…But there seemed to be some water in the same ole spot,so I set up shop there…I took a Gulf coast shrimp lure and fished it very slow…As I was fishing I had a young man walk up and ask me what the heck I expected to catch fishing “out here in the Winter”…I said I was wishing I might luck into a Trout…He laughed…said Good Luck and walked on a ways…He wasnt 50 feet away when I felt that slow pressure of a Trout grabbing my shrimp…I eased up a nice fat 17 incher…and just as I was easing him/her back in the water…I got rejoined by same young man…and this time he sat with me for a good little bit…I didnt get another tug the rest of the time I was there, but I was able to talk to this young man and showed him my little box of lures and we talked Trout fishing and He said he was gonna get out more and try it…I asked him why on Earth he wasnt out fishing since he lived so close to the fishing…and he said he never thought you could catch a fish out here in the winter…Thank God I caught that fish…Ive caught them there in December and January many times in the past…But maybe that one was a nice one because I got fired up for some more Trout fishing…and another guy maybe learned something Today and will enjoy the Beach he lives at with a Rod and a shrimp Lure…I had just released the fish when he ran back up and wanted to take a pic to put on here…Anyway…If you see a old guy with a rod and a trout lure…Its probably me…Have a good one
Place really did use to produce well. Seems to have been a few years since the water was on the rocks the right way. Good for you for getting out. I often think about walking out there in the wintertime but haven’t in quite some time.
Its been better out there with the water depths in close and such…but honestly from what I saw when I was out there…There are some good potential areas to try…High going back Towards low there is good water there…
What are you guys looking for when you say:
“…the water was on the rocks the right way”
“…there is good water there…”
I don’t know surf fishing at all, so I’m just wondering what you mean by that.
There was a time when the water would have good depth right up to the old seawall…and some of the jetties…That place is ever changing though and there are always unseen holes and gullies where fish will be.
It changes seasonally. In the winter the currents dig out the rocks in the summer they cover them up. Storms can change this but it still follows that pattern. The ends of the beach will go up and down about 5ft some years. There is a oyster mound a little further into the inlet that holds fish you can see it at low. The holes in gullies change with the tide.
