Went out at dead low today caught some nice finger mullet with the cast net near the rocks. Alot of hits on cut mullet on small double drop rig caught one 8" ray and one 14" bluefish. Chunked the blue fish on my two larger poles and waited. I get ready to leave and lean one of my poles against my chair while I start leaning up my cart and sure enough huge hit drags the rod and chair into the surf I catch up with it waste deep try to tighten down the drag and never even slowed it down took everything 100 yards of braid and 100 yards of mono. That’s a first for me thank god I had the beach to myself I looked like an idiot.
There’s some really big sharks that cruise near the beaches. Average gear won’t slow them down.

It was on my Penn 750 SS with 40lb braid and mono backer. Penn Slammer rod I honestly thought I was going to break the pole. I have caught 5 ft sharks on this rig none of them ever ran like that it had to be big.
Are you at breach inlet or moultrie?
Near breach inlet. Is there better action over by the fort?
Back in my younger days when we first moved here, I lost 2 rods and reels in that area to what must have been big sharks. Sucks to loose that much 40lb. braid. That stuff is expensive !

At least your knots didn’t fail.
Mr Roofer, sounds like you had a nice one, I have that same 750 slammer that I use for red fishing and its a good ole reel, allot of the guys that target sharks roll with much more line they start out at 400-500yds but even that isnt enough sometimes for really big fish, they also use big reels and mh-h 10-12 ft rods or roll with even heavier conventional reel set ups. Good luck out there.

If you have an old shool 750ss, I wouldn’t put more than 20# test on it. If I recall max drag is like 11#-12#?
Funny thing is the first thing I told my wife on the phone - at least my (**() knots didn’t fail.
I don’t really target the big sharks was really trying to hook a big red everyone is saying they are in the surf now.
We target big sharks from the beach and we dont have a reel on the beach with less then 65lb braid at least 500 yards of it. All of our spinners are over 8000 series.
200 yards goes pretty fast with a good size shark. . A medium size blacktip can take all that no problem and I’d bet that’s what did it to you. Getting spooled sucks but its better than catching nothing. Sounds like your trip was a good one! I use about 550 yards of power pro with about 50 yards of 25 lb mono on my surf spinners. Never been spooled with those, yet. .

Killinr what size reel do you use? I guess I need to upgrade my surf set ups, anyone have any suggestions I don’t yak baits just cast from shore. I have caught bonnet head blacktip and sharpnose.
I use about the same as killenR. Braid is so much thinner than mono. My reel is only rated for about 200 yrds at 20lb, but it holds about 500 yrds of 30 lb power pro.
You should check out the Requiem guys. They fish for the big sharks from the beach and post reports on CF.com

I hope your taking into account the amount of drag the line puts on itself pulling through the water.

My casted rod is a Sustain 10000FG /w 40lb braid. One of our guys in FL just landed a very nice lemon with the same setup.
I hooked into a big shark the other day that flipped my surf cart over - I know the feeling!
I use the Shimano Big Baitrunner long cast reels. They’re similar to the Thunnus. I use 65 lb power pro on them.
